Gertrude Sherwood, a beloved matriarch and the unwavering foundation of her family, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2026, surrounded by the love she so freely gave throughout her life. She was the heart and soul of her family—a steady, guiding presence whose strength, kindness, and generosity touched countless lives.
Gertrude was a woman who loved deeply and gave selflessly. She had a rare gift: she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, always encouraging those around her to grow, to do better, and to be their best selves. She never judged, only uplifted, offering support, wisdom, and compassion to all who knew her.
Born and raised on a farm in Pembroke, North Carolina, Gertrude carried those values with her throughout her life. Even after moving to Baltimore, she continued raising chickens, tending her garden, and cooking for those she held dear. She taught her family the importance of hard work, patience, and dedication, and her humility, strong will, and the wisdom she shared became a legacy passed down through generations.
She was the devoted wife of the late George D. Sherwood Jr.; loving mother of Ruth Sherwood, George D. Sherwood III, Linda Sherwood, and Erickia Sherwood; and a cherished grandmother to Amanda Sherwood, Brittney Sherwood, Abyan Allen, Anisah Allen, Cody Sherwood, Aseelah Allen, and Aala Allen. She was a proud great-grandmother to Marcus Fleagle and Olivia Fleagle.
Gertrude was also a dear aunt to 57 loving nieces and nephews, as well as countless great-nieces and great-nephews. She was deeply loved by many extended family members and friends who will forever hold her memory close.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, Cleveland Brewer and Attie Bullard Brewer, three brothers, Delton Brewer, Cleveland Brewer Jr, and Austin Brewer; and four sisters, Mazell Brooks, Christeen Jones, Mayola Jones, and Geraldine Locklear. She is survived by one sister, Martha Hunt.
Family and friends are invited to gather in honor of Gertrude’s life at Burgee-Henss-Seitz Funeral Home, 3631 Falls Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21236, on Wednesday, April 21st from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and on Thursday, April 22, 2026 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
A celebration of Gertrude’s life will be held on Friday, April 24, 2026 at 12:30 pm.
Interment will take place at Lakeview Memorial Park.
Gertrude’s legacy of love, strength, and compassion will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
