On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, Vonnie Laverne Johnson (nee Martin) passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late George Arthur Johnson for 54 years; loving mother of Lisa Zelenka and was predeceased by her other children Robert Johnson, Susan Wooten, George A. Johnson, Jr. and Deborah Johnson; like a mother to Butch Bayne; cherished grandmother of Christopher, Tiffany, Renee, Diana, Amanda, Heather, Justin and the late Kristina; treasured great-grandmother of Desha, Hailey, Aniah, Kaylen, Leon, Kaydence, Aniyah, Christian, Khairi, Kylee, Dominic, Jamie, Alex, Emersen and Olivia; adored great great-grandmother of Zaiden; dear sister of the late Betty, Bob, Dorothy and Donald.
Vonnie was the heart of her family, a true "Mom" to everyone who knew her — nurturing, comforting, and always ready with a warm meal and even warmer smile. A devoted Christian woman, her faith was the foundation of her life, guiding her with grace, compassion, and quiet strength. She was described by all who knew her as the kindest woman you would ever meet — the kind of person who made everyone feel like family.
A gifted cook and enthusiastic shopper, she found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She cherished road trips, especially those spent with her grandchildren, with her most treasured journey being to Tennessee, where she fulfilled a lifelong dream of attending the Grand Ole Opry — a perfect moment for a lifelong fan of old-school country music. Her love for camping grew over the years, evolving from a humble tent to a cozy camper, creating countless memories under the stars.
Vonnie especially cherished the Christmas season, filling her home with warmth, laughter, and the sound of holiday music. It was her favorite time of year — not just for the decorations and songs, but for the joy of bringing her family together, creating traditions that will live on for generations. Her gentle spirit blossomed in her love for flowers, especially pink lilies, which reflected her grace and beauty. Whether playing bingo, planning the next family adventure, or simply being present, Vonnie lived every moment with love.
