Ludwig (Lou) Peter Maykut passed away at the age of 92 on July 26. He was born on October 23, 1932, in Edmonton, Alberta and lived his entire life in Barrhead, Alberta on the family farm and then later in town.
His life and memories are cherished by the love of his life Teresa who was by his side for 62 years and their children Colleen (Brian), Joseph, Harpal (Japa), Paul (Nancy), Mary-Lou (Geoff), and Michael-John. Also, his grand and great grandchildren Megan (Riley; Brooks, Orryn, Atley and Isla), Nathan, Abigail (Andrew), Juliet, Jackson, Ava, James and Dhillion.
Left to mourn are his siblings Gerald, Cecila (Bernard), Barbara (Robert), James (Cheryl), Frances, Joyce and sister-in-law Gwen Hearty. Predeceased by parents Joseph (Lillian Niziol) and siblings Helen, Theresa, and Marianne. Also left to grieve is an extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews across the country and around the world.
He was a husband who was supportive, loving, committed and who treasured Teresa.
During his twilight years he began to travel to quench his curiosity of the world. He made two solo trips to Poland to discover his roots and make connections with his extended family. Then as a couple they travelled to the Panama Canal, Cuba, Hawaii, Australia, and many trips across Canada and to the USA.
He was also a father who encouraged, guided, and believed in our hopes and dreams. Memories of going to the Miette Hot Springs, to BC to visit family and gorge on fruit, skating on ponds, tobogganing, and playing ball in the front yard. He was proud of the many accomplishments and milestones and always cheered us on.
He was a man of faith who role modelled attributes of love, honesty, humility, patience, and honour. He was actively involved in St. Anne’s Parish as a reader and a communion server over the decades. His faith guided his actions and words to live a good meaningful life.
He was a man of the land with roots connected to the earth to create a living for his family. He grew up and then took over the family farm in Naples, Alberta as well as working on the land in Vega, Alberta. This connection to and caring for nature and all its beauty has left a legacy.
He was man of the community actively involved to ensure the well-being of others. He has provided hundreds of hours of community service in his lifetime. Starting with leadership in the Naples-Freedom 4-H club, the Naples Social Community and later with Rural Crime Watch to mention a few. When they moved to town, he joined the Barrhead and District Senior Citizens Society where he enjoyed floor curling and the community of other enthusiasts.
He was a man of adventure known for his quick wit, infectious laughter, and moves as a dancer which was balanced by a curious mind, a helping hand, and a generous heart. He loved telling jokes and was always on the lookout for a new joke and a defenseless victim. He enjoyed reading about the world and history and was also an avid photographer and videographer of family, friends, and community events. His laughter, wisdom, and love will be missed by many who had the privilege to have met him.
The family would like to thank all the healthcare staff at Shepherd’s Care, Homecare, and the Barrhead hospital who provided compassionate care over the last few years.
