Calvin L. Gott, Sr., known to his wife as “Gott” was fiercely devoted husband, father, brother, son, and friend. Calvin lived his life in a way that highlighted his diligence as a servant for the Lord; his dedication to his family, his job, and his love for others. Outside of Calvin’s love for God, his family, and friends. He loved his Louisville Cardinals college basketball team, watching racing of all kinds in his Lazyboy recliner, and he loved a good Western, particularly in black and white, even if it was a rerun. You could often find Calvin on YouTube researching anything from computers to databases, new grilling techniques, how to fix things around the house, and good Samaritans taking care of people in need's yards. After losing his neighbor and friend, Milton Casey, Calvin was not particular to yardwork, but he found a love for indoor gardening growing beautiful plants inside his home.
Calvin was born to Helen and Bobby Joe Gott Sr., in Central City, Kentucky on October 16, 1960, and he was the second of five children. Calvin confessed his love for Jesus Christ at an early age and joined Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Central City, KY. Calvin relocated to Tennessee where he remained faithful to the Lord, serving faithfully as an usher at the Morning Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Cordova, TN where he remained until God called him home.
Calvin was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Jeanette Sharp-Gott, on June 30, 1987. Calvin was faithful to the vows he made on that day for 36 years in both sickness and in health until the Lord said, his soul was required. Calvin and Jeanette were blessed with two wonderful children, a son and a daughter, of which he was immensely proud that they called him dad.
Calvin was a graduate of Kentucky State University. He was employed for MLGW where he was a devoted employee until his death. His work ethic was so strong that he took to heart the company’s motto: “Serving You Is What We Do.” Calvin not only loved what he did, but he also loved working for the company and coming into the office. Although Calvin was very knowledgeable of his work, he prided himself on being a continual student; always seeking, researching, and pursuing new knowledge. Calvin also worked part time for 16 years at Fed Ex Express until 2016.
As a person, Calvin was known for his willingness to give you his last dime and shirt off of his back. Calvin’s “office was always open”, and he enjoyed sharing his knowledge and advice to anyone that asked. As a father, Calvin was known for his “tell it like it is” attitude but also his patience, unbelievable warmth, kindness, humor, and generosity that made his children honored to have him as their father.
