Cecil Raymond Tompkins, Jr., was a native Memphian. He was born October 15, 1942 to Cecil, Sr., and Maxine Tompkins. He leaves his wife Nancy of 60 years. He also leaves his beautiful daughters, Teresa Chaney and Stephanie Mulder (Thomas Gideon), as well as four loving grandchildren: Andrew Chaney (Shannon), Elizabeth Chaney (James), Caroline Finestone (Edward), and Samantha Mulder. He has two sisters, Sandra Jenkins (Bud) and Sherry Cook (Richard).
Although he had to drop out of Memphis State to work full time, he became a successful businessman. He began his career in the insurance business, then transitioned to a wholesaler for investment companies, and finally opened his own financial planning company for 10 years. He and Nancy were fortunate to travel to many places on company trips as well as personal travel. His favorite place was Hawaii. He enjoyed spending time on Greers Ferry Lake on his boat, golfing with friends, and snow skiing in Colorado, despite his never getting out of the wedge. Cecil was elected Commissioner in Lakeland. He took his position seriously and worked diligently to do his best for the City. One of his proudest accomplishments was establishing Lakeland Education Foundation to give extra funding to our teachers.
His passion in life was music and he used his beautiful voice singing for the Lord. For many years he sang in a quartet. These guys were all friends, choir members and golfing buddies. Most Friday nights would find them practicing in one of the homes accompanied by their wives and children. He has touched so many lives with his amazing voice. The last song he sang at the age of 81 was as beautiful ever. Now, he's singing in Glory!
