The family of Elizabeth “Betty” M. Cail, sadly shares the news of her passing, on September 15, 2025. Betty passed quietly after a lengthy battle with kidney disease. She spent her final days quietly visiting with family and friends at the home of her youngest son, Gary. Betty was born in Boston, MA in 1940, in the area known as “Back Bay”, a moniker she proudly wore. Betty married her husband Arthur in 1962, who preceded her to heaven in 1998. Betty’s parents, James McGonagle (d.1973) and Susan McLaughlin-McGonagle (d.2006) were Irish immigrants, who were born in County Donegal, Ireland. Betty is survived by her sister Helen Clifford (Quincy, MA) and her brother James “Jim” McGonagle (Ca.). Betty was preceded by her brother Andrew McGonagle (d.2024).
Betty graduated from South Boston High School, and after marriage owned and operated several successful businesses with her husband, Art. She would eventually join 1st Tennessee Bank, from where she would retire in 2000 as the PBX Manager. Post retirement, Betty became very involved with her church, Queen of Peace. Beyond a church member, Betty served as a Eucharistic Minister and founded the “Young at Heart” group with Fr. John Young. The group remains active in the church today. Betty also oversaw the churches activities in the community Thrift Store. And just to keep busy, she served on her neighborhood HOA as President for many years.
In her final years, Betty resided at the Silver Creek Retirement Community, where she became the de facto Ambassador and Welcoming Committee for new residents. Betty would be the first to knock on their door, show new people around, and invite them to lunch at “her” table.
Betty was an avid animal lover, beginning at a very early age. Over the course of her life, she would rescue and raise many, many pets that became family members to her.
Betty loved music and dancing, and was known to, on more than one occasion, surprise folks with her energy and skill on the dance floor.
More than anything, Betty loved her family. She adored her grandchildren, and spending any time she could with them.
Betty is survived by her grandchildren, AJ Cail, Allison Cail, Erik Cail, Kristen Cail, Ashley Cail, Austin Wilkie, Katlyn Minott, Carlie Minott, and Nick Minott. Betty was preceded by her Grandson, Steven Cail.
She also survived by her sons, Rick Cail and his wife Pam. Michael Cail and his wife Cyndi. Danny Cail and his wife Deana, & Gary Cail and his wife Stacy.
Visitation for Betty will be at 9am, Tuesday September 23, 2025, followed by a service at 10am. At Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Olive Branch, MS. Guests are welcome to remain for lunch after service conclude.
There will be a separate graveside service for family at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in Betty’s name to the local Animal Rescue of your choosing.
