Greta was born a Beasley in Highland Home, Alabama, on August 1st 1932, to the late Dolphin D. Beasley and Essie May Owens Beasley. She has lived for her family from the start. The oldest of nine, she served as a second mother for her younger siblings. She found love with Alkurs (Al) Chandler and the couple married on April 10th, 1954. She would go on to travel with him through his 29 years of service with the U.S. Air Force. They lived on different US bases (most of them in Texas and Florida), all while raising five children, Harry, Cyndi, Theron, Jamison, and Cheryl.
After his military service, she and Al worked with the Church in Melbourne, FL for several years before they settled down in retirement in Memphis, TN. Her children over the years provided them with eleven grandchildren. She reveled in each and every one - spoiling them with desserts and unconditional love throughout their childhoods. She was Memaw.
Greta was an active and devoted follower of the Redeemer, attending the Bartlett Woods Church of Christ for the last 32 years. Her brothers and sisters in Christ were family. When she wasn’t taking care of her husband, kids, grandkids, brothers, sisters, nieces or nephews, she was giving her time back in service to the Lord. She was a people person through and through. She cultivated many deep and meaningful relationships. She still had a unique way of making everyone feel special - she radiated love and support.
Underneath her gentle demeanor and delicious baked goods lived a fiercely competitive, playful spirit. She enjoyed dominoes and playing cards – she really enjoyed winning. She was unapologetically herself, authentic and honest. She had passions - she loved to sing, to garden, to read, to cook – to take care of others. Her life was long and beautiful – full of love and devoted service to friends, family and the Creator – a role model to many.
Greta will be greatly missed - her story has been a masterclass in love and grace. She demonstrated unwavering compassion and integrity in all walks of life - she always found the silver lining. The family matriarch and north star- she will never be forgotten.
Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure.
