John Sumner Smith, 41, of Memphis Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, January 15th with his daughter, Hayden Anne Hicks, by his side. John spent his years surrounded by music, loving friends and family, good food, and plenty of books. He would say food tasted better with good music. Some of his favorites were The Beatles, Primus, TOOL, AC/DC, The White Stripes, and so on. Music was John's peace.
John loved to read and loved to learn. He was a walking encyclopedia, and loved to share his knowledge with others. He couldn't last five minutes without cracking a joke. John also had a knack for sports; specifically tennis and golf.
Most of all, John loved his friends and family. He loved to spend time with them. He loved to spend weekends with his daughter, Hayden, going to museums, concerts, and record shops.
John was predeceased by his mother, Anne Buck Smith, who died in his youth. John leaves two sisters, Lindsey Smith Halas (Miro), of California, Lauren Sissy Smith Louwagie (Grant) of Colorado, cousins Jamie Jordan, Jennifer Jordan, Mary Ruth Jordan, and Courtney Buck Reynolds, his nieces and nephews, and his many friends. His aunt, Jane Buck Jordan, who was also with him at the time of death.
A memorial gathering of family and friends for John will be held Saturday, January 21, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133.
