She was born February 26th, 1927 and lived almost her entire life in Holland, TX. She married Melvin Goodnight on December 21st, 1947. Estelle and Melvin owned and operated Holland Drug Store in Holland, TX for many years. Melvin died following a tragic accident on June 6th, 1970.
Estelle married J.D. (Pete) Coker on December 21st, 1996. She lived in Holland, TX until her death.
She actively served at her church, St. John Lutheran Church in Bartlett, TX. She was also very involved and served her community in various capacities in Holland, TX. She served her church by co-chairing the bereavement committee for 20 years, was a member of the Church Alter Guild and she was active in numerous church fund raising activities.
Her community involvement included serving as an officer of the Holland Women’s Study Club where she was a member for over 50 years, Charter member and director of the Mayfield-Dobbs Museum and B.J. Hill Library. She promoted businesses and development in Holland and was a cornerstone in many Holland Chamber of Commerce activities. She also served on the Holland Corn Festival Board, the Will O’Bell nursing home board in Bartlett, TX and on the Holland Cemetery Association. She was an SPJST member for almost 30 years where she served as lodge reporter and was active in SPJST fundraisers. She received the State Fraternalist of the Year Award from SPJST in 2006 for her outstanding fraternal and community service. She was an officer of the American Legion auxiliary.
As a 36 year breast cancer survivor, she always supported the Temple Relay for Life fundraiser. She actively worked to promote breast cancer awareness and education.
Her husband Melvin Goodnight, daughter Sharon Neuman and her parents Julius and Dora Kourt preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband J.D. (Pete Coker), two sons Larry Goodnight of Georgetown, TX, David Goodnight of Harrisburg, PA, step daughter Mary Davis of Cat Springs, TX, 5 grand children Shelley Goolsby of Friendswood, TX, Ashley Goodnight of Round Rock, TX, Kevin Goodnight of Spring, TX, Hannah Goodnight of Harrisburg, PA, Noah Goodnight of Harrisburg, PA, two step grand children Roxanne Coker of Houston, TX and Leah McDowell of Cat Springs, TX. Estelle is also survived by 5 great grand children and one step great grandchild.
Estelle loved spending time with her family and energetically serving her church, her community and gardening.
Visitation will be held from 6-8pm Tuesday July 29th at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett, TX. Funeral service is to be conducted at 9am Wednesday, July 30th at St John Lutheran Church in Bartlett with burial service immediately following at the Holland Cemetery in Holland, Texas, with Pastor Joe Woodward, of St. John Lutheran Church of Bartlett, TX officiating.
