

He was born on January 8, 1929 in Peoria, Illinois to Earl and Irma (Mayall) McMullen. He married Juanita E. Estep on May 7, 1949 in Springfield, Illinois. She preceded him in death on March 21, 2010 in Farmington, Illinois. He is also preceded in death by one infant son, William McMullen; four brothers, Harry, Clifford, Lawrence and George McMullen; five sisters, Wilma Dean Gale, June Stear, Laverne Velpel, Mary Ann English and Ruth McMullen.
Gene worked for 34 years at Caterpillar Inc. as a machine repairman, retiring in 1984. He later worked in maintenance at the Tri-County Women’s Strength. He was an Army Veteran in the Korean Conflict and a participant of the Greater Peoria Honor Flight. He was a member of the Joseph Robbins Masonic Lodge #930 A.F. &A. M, former treasurer of the Oak Grove Fire Protection District, Oak Grove School District 68 Board Member, Peoria County Election Judge, Cubmaster, Pack 208 in Bartonville, Scoutmaster, Troop 208 of Bartonville, Habitat for Humanity Volunteer, Farmington Country Manor Residents Council and the Greater Peoria Protestant Dart Ball League. He had been a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion. Gene was a long time member of the Bethel Lutheran Church of Bartonville and its Brotherhood, and Golden Years Group. He was a member and past president of the church council. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and gardening. He loved woodworking and was an avid Chicago Cubs Fan.
He is survived by two sons, David W. (Anne) McMullen of Mapleton and Kenneth E. (Karen) McMullen of Bartonville and three grandsons, James E. (Megan) McMullen of Washington, Jared N. and Shane D. McMullen of Bartonville. Gene has one sister surviving, Darlene Werts of Virginia, Illinois. He has numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Bartonville at 11:00 AM Thursday, October 6, 2016. The Rev. Raymond Barclay will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in the Parkview Cemetery in Peoria.
