

Born in Lomax, WV, January 5, 1913, she was a daughter of the late George Grover Wade and Sue Philpott Wade. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Cloy M. (Monk) Mattox, Sr., sons, Cloy M. Mattox, Jr. and Dr. Bruce W. Mattox, a sister, Mary Elizabeth Kinney, and brothers, George G. Wade and H. Jack Wade, and a step-great-grandson Scott Rhea.
Dixie was the oldest living member of Bassett Memorial United Methodist Church, and was very active in the Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Piedmont Arts Association. She received an Associate degree from Virginia Intermont, her Bachelors from Radford University, and her Masters in Educational Administration from the University of Virginia. She was an educator for 38 years in the Henry County School System, and served as the first principal of Collinsville Primary School, and then served for seven years as Principal of Campbell Court Elementary School.
Surviving is her sister, Virginia Belle Farmer of Bassett, her daughter-in-law, Betsy S. Mattox of Stanleytown, five grandchildren, Mark R. Mattox and his wife Rhonda of Indiana, Dixie M. Baumgarten and her husband Kurt of North Carolina, B. Wade Mattox, Jr. and his wife Morgan of New York, Ashley M. Trotter and her husband, Robert of Massachusetts, P. Gatlin Mattox of North Carolina, eleven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Monday, November 8, 2010, at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett, with the Rev. Dorian Powell officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.
