Wilbur Dale Utt, 80, of Bassett, went home to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Ararat, Virginia, on June 3, 1943, to the late Henry Creed Utt and Bertie Alma Sechrist Utt. He was also preceded in death by two of his brothers, Clifton Ford Utt and Zeno Clyde Utt and has surviving siblings as follows: Gray Conrad Utt (Nancy) of Ararat; Alma Utt Sueme of St. Louis, Missouri; and his twin brother, Bruce Hale Utt of Stuart.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra Russell Utt of Bassett, and his two daughters, Adrianne Utt Edwards (Lee) and Ashley Utt Dunovant (Jason), both of Martinsville. He treasured time spent with his family and loved his “little girl bears” so much.
He graduated from Hillsville High School, Ferrum College, and Appalachian State University. He received a post-graduate degree from Radford University. As a newlywed, he managed Lenglad Campground and was a “Smokey Bear” Ranger for the Virginia Park Service. He retired as safety director from Virginia Mirror Company but had worked as an insurance agent, teacher, and chemist throughout his career. He enjoyed various hobbies including trains, rockhounding, amateur radio, fishing, gardening, and photography.
He loved Jesus with all his heart and served faithfully over the years as a Sunday School teacher, youth director, choir member, and lay speaker. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Collinsville. He loved and enjoyed his church family which was a big part of his life.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Hwy, Bassett, VA.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Collins Funeral Home with Reverend Raymond Moorefield officiating. Burial will follow in Henry Memorial Park.
