
Betty Jean Holden Munley, 77, of Baton Rouge, passed away on Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at her home surrounded by loved ones. Betty fought a courageous battle with cancer and died with grace and dignity. Betty was born in DeWitt, Ark., on Aug. 14, 1931, the daughter of the late Harry Lee and Grace Ogle Holden. After graduation, Betty moved to Kilgore, Texas, and began modeling. There she met her future husband of 49 years, Charles M. Munley. She lived in Wynne, Ark., Kilgore, Eldorado, Ark., and Sterlington, prior to moving to Baton Rouge in 1970. Betty served on many volunteer boards and was especially proud of her service work in the church and her children's schools, Mothers of Acacia, the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America. Betty will be remembered by all who knew her. She had a genuine concern for others, was an awesome mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, dessert baker, and most of all a Southern lady. Betty's favorite time was with family on Ono Island, Ala. Betty never forgot her faith in God and was devoted to her family in Arkansas. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Martin Munley Sr.; brother, Harry Lee Holden Jr.; brother-in-law, Herb E. Baker; and nephew, Rusty D. Baker. Survived by her three children, Mary Munley Obier and her husband, William P. Obier III, of Rosedale, Melinda Munley Broussard and her husband, James F. Broussard, of Baton Rouge, and Charles M. Munley Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, of Central; sister, Gail Holden Baker, of Wimberley, Texas; sister-in law, Sylvia Holden, of Oklahoma City; and aunt, Margaret Ogle Bivins, of Waskom, Texas; six grandchildren, Daisy Obier Schudmak and her husband, Charles E. Schudmak, Albert Hampton Obier and his wife, Laura Poche Obier, Alexandra, Brandon Charles, Anna Claire Munley and Mary Hannah Grace Broussard. The newest arrival and a great joy to Mrs. Munley was her only great-grandchild, Charles Leon Schudmak. Betty is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins in Texas and Arkansas. Betty was a member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church. Honorary pallbearers are W.V. Rogers, Wendell Shiflett, Donald Tubb, Herbert Baker, John Hillman and William P. Obier Jr. Pallbearers will be Bill Obier, Charlie Schudmak, Hampton Obier, Brandon Munley, Robert Baker, Harry L. Holden III and James F. Broussard. The family would like to offer our thanks to Betty's special friends, Ona Vee Rogers, Nellie Reeves, Janis Copenhaver and Cynthia Tubb. Special thanks to St. Joseph's Hospice for their caring services. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Thursday, Dec. 18, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation at Broadmoor United Methodist Church on Friday from noon until funeral service at 1 p.m., under the direction of the Rev. Kenneth Carroll. Graveside services will be held at the Rosedale Cemetery in Rosedale.
