Billy Joe Stears passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 15th, 2024 at 11:00 AM surrounded by family and friends. He was born on August 11,1952 in Opelousas, LA. He was an electrical engineer at Dow Chemical, and throughout his 39-year career, he exemplified hard work and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on those with whom he worked personally and professionally. Billy was also a true legend in the coaching profession. His passion for softball and mentorship led him to be inducted into the Louisiana ASA Softball Hall of Fame, and he was awarded Coach of the year during his tenure as head coach of the St. Joseph’s Academy softball team. His leadership and guidance inspired countless athletes to reach their full potential both on and off the field. Billy’s life was a testament to perseverance, strength, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who touched the lives of many with his kindness, wisdom and indomitable spirit. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Sally Stears, his daughter Monica Rawls (Jason) and son Chad Stears (Tiffany) and grandchildren Brandon Rawls, Connor Rawls (Regan), Austin, Hannah, and Greysen Stears, and great-grandson Emmett Rawls. He is also survived by his siblings, James E. Stears (Rocky), Quentin Stears (Sandra) and Sandra Soileau (Carroll), and numerous nieces and nephews. Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Vonola and Horace Stears, His sister Rita Gayle Stears, maternal grandparents Lena and Marius Soileau Sr., and paternal grandparents Lorena and Louis Stears. Billy’s legacy of resilience, love and dedication will forever be cherished by those who knew him. Though he may be gone, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA. 70815 on Monday May 20th at 1:00pm. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, 6305 Groom Rd., Baker, LA 70714.
