A resident of Asheville, N.C., she died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, after an extended illness. She was 81. Mrs. McFarland was born Oct. 10, 1929, in Easley, S.C. to M. Luther and Nettie E. Brown (both now deceased) and was one of seven children. Mrs. McFarland attended the Tamassee DAR School in Tamassee, S.C. She graduated in 1950 from Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women, in Rock Hill, S.C., with a bachelor of science degree in commerce. In 1951, Mrs. McFarland married William "Bill" H. McFarland, of Reserve. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe while he served on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. Upon her husband's release from active duty, she and her husband established the family's home in Metairie. Mrs. McFarland served her community for many years as a business education teacher. After their children were grown and Mr. McFarland retired from the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. McFarland moved to Mandeville, where they resided until Mr. McFarland's death in 2000. Mrs. McFarland moved to Asheville in January 2003, where she resided until her death. Mrs. McFarland, a devoted and loving wife and mother, is survived by her children, Mrs. Virginia M. Green and husband Randy, of Shelby, N.C., Col. William H. McFarland Jr., U.S. Army (retired) and wife Sandi, of Woodbridge, Va., Dr. Susan L. McFarland, of Houston and Ms. Patricia M. Martin, of Boxford, Mass.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Monday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Graveside services will follow immediately at Roselawn Memorial Park, 4045 North St. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Mrs. Bobbie B.
