Camille Carpenter Wood

Camille was born to N. Leslie Carpenter and Ethel Y. Carpenter in Evanston, Illinois on June 29, 1944. She spent her early years in Natchez, MS and then moved to Greenwich, Connecticut. She attended boarding school at Chatham Hall in Virginia, college at Sophie Newcomb in New Orleans and at the University of North Carolina.

Camille was very active in the Episcopal Church and was called to study for the Diaconate. She was ordained as a Deacon at Christ Church Cathedral in New Orleans on December 4, 2010. She served faithfully at St. Andrew's in Clinton, Louisiana, St. Patrick’s in Zachary, Louisiana and St. Alban's on the LSU campus.

Camille was married to Fernie Wood Jr. who loved her dearly and stood by her side through every joy and challenge of their life together. Woody, as Camille called him, took exceptional care of her during the final stages of her illness. He provided her with unwavering love, comfort, and strength and made sure she felt cared for every day. His devotion to Camille showed the true meaning of their lasting love and commitment.

Camille is survived by her husband, Fernie, children Anthony (Stacey), Alixe (Patrick), step- children Marron (Josh) and Dix. Grandchildren Ashton, Lilly, Aidan, Jordan, Jeanne, Rucker, Hattie, and Gaines and step-grandchildren Victoria, Elizabeth Kate and Tre. Brothers Joe and Leslie. Sisters Cassell, Esther and Alma. She was preceded in death by her parents Leslie and Ethel, step mother Alma K. Carpenter and sister Alixe C. Hugret.

Camille's love for her family was profound and she cherished her grandchildren deeply. She imparted to them the true meaning of faith through her words and actions. Camille's gentle spirit, wisdom and faith were a guiding light for her grandchildren teaching them the importance of kindness, compassion, and trust in God's plan. Her legacy of faith and love will continue to inspire her family for generations to come. Camille's end here on earth is the beginning of an eternity in the presence of our God, where she has found eternal peace and joy. Though we mourn her passing, we take comfort in knowing she is now free from pain, embraced by the divine love of our Lord.

The family is profoundly appreciative for Camille's caregiver's during her illness. Joyce Carter Wilson, who with love and devotion cared for Camille for over five years. The end of her life care was assisted by Reshonda Carter and Cora Spears. The family will be forever grateful for their dedication and love.

The Burial Office with Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at Trinity Episcopal Church 3552 Morning Glory Avenue in Baton Rouge on Thursday, July 25 at 2:00pm. The Rev. Peter Wong will officiate the service. Camille's family will receive visitors from 12:30 to 1:30 in the Common Room at Trinity and there will be a reception following the service as well. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Camille's name to the Trinity Endowment Fund.
