

Carey Joseph Guglielmo, Sr. was born January 4, 1938, and passed peacefully in his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on May 4, 2026. A devoted father, husband, son, brother and beloved grandfather and great grandfather, he will be remembered for being a gentleman of fine character and integrity.
Carey graduated from Catholic High School in Baton Rouge in 1956 with honors and is a proud member of the Grizzly Greats. He attended Louisiana State University on an athletic scholarship where he played both basketball and baseball, making all SEC in baseball in 1960, and lettered in both sports. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. While at LSU, he was inducted as a member in the prestigious national leadership honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa Honors Society, was honored with the President’s Medal for ROTC, and was amongst “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities”. Following undergraduate, he pursued a law degree from LSU Law School where he was president of his law school fraternity, winner of the distinguished Robert L. Tullis Moot Court Competition and served as Chairman of the Moot Court Board.
Carey was proud of his military service, serving in the US Army Military Police from 1963-1965 and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.
Carey began practicing law in the fall of 1965 with Kantrow, Spaht & Kleinpeter, later becoming partner. He eventually was founding partner of Guglielmo, Marks, Schutte, Terhoeve, & Love, where he practiced until his retirement. He taught as an adjunct professor for insurance law courses and trial courses at LSU Law School. He was licensed to practice in federal, state and local courts. He served on the Board of Directors of the Louisiana State Bar Association and was president of the Baton Rouge Bar Association. He spoke at multiple national seminars on insurance law.
He was preceded in death by his lovely and devoted wife, Elizabeth “Betsy” Hall Guglielmo, as well as his parents, Dudley and Nellie Guglielmo, and his sister, Lucille Roy. He is survived by his children and their spouses Nell Guglielmo Patrick and Kirk “Patrick” Patrick III, Carey Joseph Guglielmo Jr and Ashley Jones Guglielmo, and Doris Guglielmo Cather and James “Ham” Cather, Sr., as well as his 8 grandchildren Elizabeth “Betsy” Patrick Pharis (John), Tapper Joseph Patrick (Wallace), Mary Frances Patrick (Ricky), Tyree Theriot Patrick, Carey Joseph Guglielmo III “Tripp”, Anne Scott Guglielmo, James Hamilton Cather Jr., and William Joffrion Cather; and five great grandchildren, John Patrick Pharis, Mary Helen Pharis, Margaret James Pharis, Anne Wallace Patrick, and Lawrence Joseph Patrick, along with his brother, Dudley Guglielmo, and many family members.
The family would like to recognize the loving caregivers, Linda Rankin, Chimica O’Conner, Ursula Pinkney, Kathleen Anderson, Linda Kelley and Elsie Plain as well as his Hospice of Baton Rouge nurse and assistant, Debbie Sparacello and Cora Wise who provided loving care. We will be eternally grateful for the kindness, love, and care you provided to “Mr. C” which allowed him to remain at home.
Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 445 Marquette Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA on Tuesday, May 12 beginning at 9 a.m., until a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, friends may honor Carey Guglielmo, Sr. with gifts/donations to Hospice of Baton Rouge, Catholic High School, the LSU Law School, the LSU Athletic Foundation or Our Lady of Mercy Church.
