
Claude John Naquin Senior, Ph.D., 87 died November 9, 2013. He is survived by six children, John Naquin, Cathy Braud, Mary Moss, Mark Naquin, Joseph Naquin, Thomas Naquin, adopted son Cameron Smith; nine grandchildren, Kyle Braud, Dory Roberts, Jenny Engle, Mandy Alston, Mitchell Naquin, Caleb Naquin, Mark David Naquin, Mathew Naquin, Jacob Naquin; and, three great grandchildren Sally Roberts, Samuel Alston and Collins June (C.J.) Engle. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Hebert Naquin; his parents Leon Naquin and Cecile Daigle Naquin; his siblings Arthur Naquin, Clair Naquin, Leona Olivier; and, friend and companion, Gail Smith. C.J. is also survived by special friends, Dot DeBosier and Dean Edrington. C.J. was born in Labadieville, LA on June 6, 1926. He proudly served in the South Pacific in the U.S. Navy as a gunner on the M/V Hitch Trader. He graduated from LSU in 1948 with a B.S in agriculture. He went on to earn a master's degree and doctorate in agriculture from LSU. He began his career in service to others teaching agriculture in Larose and Larose Cut-Off, Louisiana for three years. He then began a 37- year career in 1951 with LSU's Agricultural Extension Service working as Assistant and Associate County Agents in Lafourche, St. Landry and Avoyelles Parishes. In 1958 he moved to Baton Rouge to work at the LSU Agricultural Extension Service Headquarters at Knapp Hall. He served as an Associate District Program Specialist for 21 parishes, 4-H District Program Specialist, 4-H Associate State Agent, and was the first Louisiana 4-H Foundation Director. C.J. received the Distinguished Service Award from LSU Cooperative Extension Service. Before retiring in 1989, C.J. would be cited by the Louisiana 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees for his leadership in establishing, coordinating and promoting the Louisiana 4-H Foundation in 1979. Historically, the foundation was established to honor John A. Cox, Director of the Cooperative Extension Service. This became the forerunner of the Louisiana 4-H Foundation. After dedicating his career to 4-H, C.J. received a scholarship endowment in the Louisiana 4-H Foundation, providing "support for an entering freshman attending any two or four year college". In 2008 C.J. was recognized for his service to 4-H by being inducted into the Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame. On October 10, 2008 C.J. would receive the highest honor that can be bestowed upon someone in 4-H, being inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame in Washington D.C. After retiring, he continued to serve others through membership in LSU Kiwanis and he served as president for one term of the organization. C.J. dedicated his career in service to others through his work with 4-H and devoted his life to his family and friends always making himself available.
