

Psalm 91: 2 "He is my refuge and my fortress, My God in Him I will trust." He died peacefully in his sleep on May 14, 2016 one month before his 94th birthday. He was born June 13, 1922 in Vicksburg, MS. He was owner of Newman's' Furniture Co. in Baton Rouge and later retired from Joy's Furniture Co. He also held credentials with the Assemblies of God as an ordained minister until his death. He was a graduate of Terrill Preparatory School, Dallas, TX. He had two years of junior college, and two years in interior design. He also was a World War II veteran and served in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign. He bravely fought for the U.S.A. in the company E 382 Infantry Division, and the 96th Infantry Division nicknamed the Deadeyes. Battles include Okinawa and the Philippines. He fought in the famous battle in the Philippines when General MacArthur said: "I Shall return." He departed the Campaign with 2 Bronze Stars, 1 Bronze Arrowhead, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. Survived by a son, David K. Newman and wife Cindy; and 4 daughters; Ruth Newman and husband Marvin; Debra Courtney and husband Kelvin; Beverly Cannon and husband Gene; Audrey Rist and husband, Charles, Jr., twelve grandchildren; Stephanie Newman Strickland and former husband Dean Strickland, Nathan Newman and wife April, Melissa Newman, Mark Newman and wife Bridget, Julie Duckworth and husband Karl, Angela Littrell and husband Kevin, Jonathan Courtney.andt wife Lydia, Daniel Courtney and wife Kaitlyn, Candace Alfarran and husband Lewis, Jeremy Rist, Matthew Rist&Nicholas Rist; 22 great grandchildren. He also has numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Beverly A. (Armstrong) Newman, parents; Daniel Calvin Newman, Sr.&Ruth Beatrice (Speake) Newman; son: Daniel Calvin Newman, III and grandson: Gene LaValle Cannon, Jr.(Bubba), and a great granddaughter: McKenzie Nicole Courtney, brother, William Newman and wife Betty and sisters Betty Canning and husband Doug, Gladys Newman, and Juanita Trahan. Pallbearers will be grandsons with honorary pallbearer, David K. Newman. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St. Friday May 20, 2016, 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Visitation will resume Saturday 9:00 A. M. until religious services at 11:00 A.M. conducted by the Rev. Kelvin Courtney. Interment will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.
