

David G. Hurlbert passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Dave was born on November 30, 1926 in Suffolk, Virginia and grew up on the family chicken farm gathering eggs. He wrestled in high school and played halfback. Dave joined the Army after graduating high school. After returning from the war, he enrolled at Virginia Tech University and graduated in Civil Engineering. He worked for Union Carbide for 35 years beginning his career in Charleston, West Virginia. There he met and married Nancy C. Duncan Hurlbert and they were happily married for 45 years. Dave's career as Construction Project Manager took him to assignments in Louisiana, Texas, Washington, Georgia, Puerto Rico and Belgium.Dave is survived by his four children: David D. Hurlbert and wife Deborah of Baton Rouge, Mary H. Stein and husband Daniel of Baton Rouge, John C. Hurlbert and wife Sandra of Garland, Texas and Jane T. Canales and husband Rick of Austin, Texas and by seven grandchildren, David Grant Hurlbert, Daniel Stein, Michael Stein, Corinne Hurlbert, Meredyth Hurlbert, Natalie Hurlbert and Ricky Canales, and by three great grandchildren, Seattle, Kaylee, and Cooper. Dave was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church. He was a practicing member of the Optimist Club, he held several PTA offices, was Cub Scout Master, volunteer math teacher in night school and active in numerous churches he attended. Dave had a big heart and was always willing to help others. He was an active sportsman who enjoyed fishing, bowling, and golf and was a Life Master in Bridge. He loved to sing and make a joyful noise even if he was not always on key. Above all, Dave was a gentleman, a loving, kind and upbeat person whose sense of humor will be remembered forever by his family and friends. Burial will take place at the family cemetery in Mannington, West Virginia at a later date.
