Born on November 30, 1954, in Jennings, Louisiana, Debra grew up with a deep love of family and a creative spirit that followed her throughout life. She carried that passion into everything she did, whether it was making jewelry, painting, collecting unique pieces of art, or creating lasting memories with those she loved.
Debra is survived by her devoted husband, Mickey Gowland; her children, Leslie Algero (Mike), Lydia DuSaules (Mark), Michelle Bryan, and Brian Johnson (Sunnie); 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immeasurable joy. She is also survived by her loving sisters, Donna Kay Knight and Dale Holloway; and many extended family members and friends who were touched by her warmth. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Edna Elaine Watson and Nolan Roy Bendily, brother, James Alfred Bendily.
Affectionately known for her unforgettable laugh, her giving heart, and her great sense of humor, Debra’s presence could light up any room. She was rarely seen without one of her beloved hats, which became as much a part of her signature style as her smile. Family gatherings—especially at “Camp Sweetie Pies and Bad Guys”—were where she shined most, surrounded by children, laughter, and the chaos she adored.
Those who knew Debra will remember her artistic eye, her joyful spirit, and her unwavering devotion to her family. Her legacy will live on in the love she gave, the art she created, and the joy she inspired in others.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her two incredible caretakers, Mrs. Shelley Birch and Angela Longstreet, whose kindness, compassion, and support brought comfort and dignity to Debra in her final days. Their care will never be forgotten.
She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
