
Dr. Edward William Gassie died at 11:07 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. He was a retired LSU Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Education for the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service. He was 86 years of age, born on November 29, 1925 at Mark, La. He served as a Pharmacist's Mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a founding member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Cecile Hebert Gassie; two brothers, Lawrence and Alfred E.; one sister, Carolyn G. Martinez; and one grandson, Jeffrey Mark Gassie II. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Lucas Gassie; his daughter, Janice G. Warren and husband Prather; and his two sons, Edward, Jr. and wife Sondra, and Jeffrey and fiancée Anne Marie Jarrett. He is survived by his grandson Jason Walker and wife Angela; granddaughters Megan G. McArdle and husband Ben, Hannah Gassie of Spring Hill College and their mother Kim S. Gassie; and granddaughters Reese and Shelby Gassie of Leonardtown, Md. He is survived by his great granddaughter Violet Olivia Walker; his sister Lorraine Breaux of Addis, La.; sisters-in-law Betty S. Gassie, Edna Mae B. Gassie and Vera T. Lucas; and brother-in-law Freddie Martinez. He also is survived by his godchildren Sharon B. Rabalais, Debbie L. Bajon and Lee Lucas. Visitation will be held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Baton Rouge on Monday March 5 from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Tuesday March 6 from 10 to 11 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted by Fr. Than Vu at St. Aloysius Catholic Church on Tuesday March 6 at 11 a.m., followed immediately by interment at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. A brief military service ceremony by the American Legion is planned. Pallbearers will be his nephews Mike Martinez, Ronnie Gassie, David Gassie, Glynn Gassie, Lee Lucas and Deric Breaux. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. and Mrs. Edward W. Gassie 4-H Scholarship Fund, the St. Vincent de Paul Pharmacy, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank or other appropriate charity.
