George Moseley Lane, 88, a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away at his home Thursday, July 15, 2010, after a short illness. He was born in Gallatin, Tenn., on Dec. 14, 1921, the son of Edwin Green and Ruth Day Lane. He leaves behind his best friend and wife of 65 years, Bettie Cadzow Lane, originally of New Orleans. George was a captain in the Marine Corps and was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in Rabaul, New Britain, during World War II. After the war, he attended the Georgia Tech Institute of Technology, where he helped to found the honor Industrial Engineering Society and earned admission into Tau Beta Pi. George worked at Ethyl Corp. for 33 years and retired in 1985, giving up the corporate world to pursue his love of golf and travel. He is also survived by a son, George Moseley Lane Jr., a daughter, Ruth Lane Bass, and a grandson, Matthew Marston Lane, all of Baton Rouge. George was blessed with a big family - two brothers and three sisters - and is survived by a sister, Patsy L. Kelley, of Gallatin. He had many wonderful nieces and nephews, but was especially close with Pattie Suddarth, of Gallatin, Peggy Shaw, of Houston, and Clarke Cadzow, of Baton Rouge. In addition, he had the joy of having stepgrandchildren, Pat and Angela Quint, of Port Allen, and Ken Bass, of Austin, Texas; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Meghan, Emily and Ryan Quint, and Stephen, Kyle, Tori and Emerson Bass, of Texas. An important part of his extended family was John and Cindy Barksdale, Shannon and Alex Mahon, Lauren and Carter Hill, Kelsey Barksdale and her fiancé, Jonathan Dukes, Adam Barksdale, who remains alive in our hearts, and McKinley Marie Mahon, the newest member of our family. Special thanks to Millie Cudd and our caring, longtime Broadmoor neighbors, who have been indispensable during this time. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at Broadmoor United Methodist Church. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. at the church, and a reception will be held following the service. Arrangements by Rabenhorst Funeral Home East., 11000 Florida Blvd.
