He was a longtime resident of Watson, Louisiana, and a man whose life was marked by service, devotion, and quiet strength.
Jim was born in Zeeland, Michigan, on November 1, 1944, where he learned early on the values of hard work, faith, and loyalty—principles that guided him throughout his life. Those who knew Jim knew him as a hard worker, a steady presence and someone you could always depend on. He loved his family unconditionally and made sure that they knew it, in one way or another. Jim never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His kind and gentle disposition made anyone and everyone feel welcome.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from November 12, 1963, to November 9, 1967, answering a call to serve that never left him. Following his military service, Jim spent more than 50 years as an aircraft mechanic, a career that perfectly suited his meticulous nature and strong sense of responsibility. While he may have retired from the Louisiana State Police, he never put away his tools or work ethic.
Jim was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of over 60 years, Linda Lee Elenbaas, whose love and partnership were the foundations of his life. He was a proud father to Sheri (Kenny) and Jerry(Carlyn), a role which he cherished deeply. His greatest joy came from being “PawPaw” to his grandchildren Tristan (Matthew), Kaleb (Lauren), Justin, Karlee, CeCe, Jamie, and Glenn, and great-grandchildren Brogan, Ella Kate, and Kullen, who brought immeasurable happiness to his later years.
You could always find Jim busy piddling, tinkering, fixing his lawnmowers, hanging clothes on the line, playing cards, attending his grandchildren’s ball games, driving the pontoon at sunset or enjoying his fishing camp.
A man of faith, Jim trusted in God’s promises and lived his life with humility, integrity, and grace. He was most proud of his family and the life he worked so hard to build for them. His love was steady, his guidance sure, and his presence comforting. He will be forever remembered for his dedication to hard work, his quiet humor, his card tricks, and his steadfast support for the people he loved.
Though our hearts grieve his absence, we rejoice in the assurance that Jim has been welcomed into eternal peace, hearing the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” His legacy will continue to live on through the generations he loved so dearly, and the countless lives he touched along the way.
*The family would like to thank the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office, EMS, beloved neighbors and extended family for their kindness and support.
