Jeanne Graugnard Tregre, 93, passed away peacefully at home on November 6, 2022, surrounded by family. She was born July 19, 1929, to Azelie and Emile Graugnard of Terre Haute Plantation (Lions, LA); her siblings were Fernand, Azelie, Marie Louise, Regina, Leon (“Cat”), and Emilie. She was a graduate of St. Peter Catholic School, Leon Godchaux High School, and Southwestern Louisiana Institute. She married Bruce St. Clair Tregre in 1950. They had six children: Marie, Bruce Jr., Michael, Julie, Patricia, and Jeanne Catherine.
Jeanne worked at the Louisiana Department of Welfare for over 35 years. In retirement, she loved to walk, fish, garden, crochet, and spend time with family. Devoted Catholics, Jeanne and Bruce were founding members of St. Thomas More Parish, and they devoted many hours to Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration.
Jeanne regularly opened her home to a sprawling extended family, and was renowned for her Christmas Eve gumbo and Easter crawfish bisque. Carrying on the love of music passed down from her father, Jeanne encouraged her children’s musical pursuits, and she especially enjoyed sing-alongs on Christmas Eve. For more than 35 years she made sure her children (and eventually grandchildren) had front-row seats to the Baton Rouge Little Theater’s summer musical. She was an active member of Woods and Waters Club of Baton Rouge, and the family took many road trips to U.S. National Parks.
Jeanne is survived by three daughters, Marie (Mike) Rourke, Patricia (Danny) DeWeese, and Cathy (Larry) Kelly, along with 13 grandchildren and step-grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her six siblings; husband Bruce Tregre; sons Bruce Jr. “Spike” and Michael; daughter Julie Cherry; and grandson Jordy Rourke.
Special thanks to Hospice of Baton Rouge and to the caregivers who provided support in her final months: Veronica, Lisa, Carlette, Iesha, and Paris.
