Joel Layfette Myrick III, age 75, proud husband, father and veteran of Baton Rouge, LA, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2024. Born on February 5, 1949, to Quilla Myrick and Joel Myrick Jr., he was a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge.
Joel was a graduate of Lee High School, class of 1967. He served as a personnelman in the U.S. Navy in the Vietnam War from 1970-1974. He went on to attend Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA, where he received his Bachelors in Accounting. Joel worked in various executive roles in his career of 40 years and retired as a Systems Analyst from LSUHSC in 2016.
Joel met his college sweetheart, Beverly, at a Southeastern football game. They married in 1975 and built a life filled with love, laughter, and the joyous hustle and bustle of raising their three children: Scott, Kara, and Meaghan. He was a devoted father, known for his presence at his children’s dance recitals and sporting events, and for the unforgettable family trips to Orange Beach.
Joel was a faithful Christian and loved to worship & serve his Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ. He was an active member of Jefferson Baptist Church where he sang in the choir. Joel was a man of many talents, with a particular knack for fixing things and working with his hands. His ability to assemble, build, and fix anything and everything was legendary among his family. He generously shared his skills with his children and his legacy lives on through the many life lessons and practical skills he imparted. Joel loved to cook and made the best Sunday pancakes, grilled cheese, and red beans and rice. He loved to spend time with his family and will be remembered as a faithful and loving husband, father, and Poppy.
Joel is survived by Beverly Simmons Myrick, his wife of 49 years; son, Joel Scott Myrick and his wife Lisa Myrick; daughter, Kara Nicole Myrick-Emele, and her husband Henry Emele; daughter Meaghan Myrick Barron & her husband Al Barron II; and his five grandchildren: Jenny, Austin, Liam, Ugo, and Dembe. Also, many cousins, nephews, nieces, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, and uncles. He was greeted in heaven by his parents, Quilla Viola Rook Myrick and Joel Layfette Myrick Jr.
Visitation for Joel will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Jefferson Baptist Church, 9135 Jefferson Highway, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A funeral service will follow Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at Jefferson Baptist Church. An interment will follow Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70815.
