

Mildred “Myrtle” Bullock Baker, a native of Glenmora, LA and a resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on January 18, 2015 at the age of 92. After graduating from Port Arthur Business College in 1939 and working in the Port Arthur area, Myrtle moved to Baton Rouge in 1944. There she was hired by Standard Oil of Louisiana (Esso) as Secretary to the Secretary Treasurer where she worked until 1961 when she retired to be a full-time wife and mother. As a homemaker, Myrtle pursued the arts of gardening, sewing, cooking and canning. Always busy, she continued these activities well into her 90’s. Myrtle also stayed active with volunteer work in her church and community and was recently the eldest docent at Burden Rural Life Museum. She will always be remembered for her love of entertaining that sprang from the joy she received from serving and loving others. Myrtle was a woman of many talents and interests who dedicated her life to her family as a loving wife, mother, aunt and grandmother. Myrtle is survived by her husband of 58 years, John B. Baker; daughters, Susan Hiemenz and husband J.J., and Joan Baker; grandchildren, John Hiemenz and fiancé Amy Blumenthal, and Clark Hiemenz; sisters, Wanda Nelson, Gay Melder and husband L.J., and Fay Holloway; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hardy and Lola Bullock; brother, L.G. Bullock; and sisters, Lorene Gormley, Melba Mayeux, and Verna Lee Billings. Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 20, 2015, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Visitation will continue at University United Methodist Church, 3350 Dalrymple Dr. in Baton Rouge, on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 from 9:00 am until the funeral service begins at 10:00 am. Interment will immediately follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to University United Methodist Church, or to a charity of your choice.
