
A resident of Baton Rouge, he was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1917. He graduated from the University of Toronto (B.A., Honors, Geology and Mineralogy), 1939, and M.I.T. (Ph.D. Geology), 1942. After several years as a mine geologist in eastern Canada, he joined the faculty of Washington State University at Pullman, Wash., where between 1950 and 1982 he served as professor and chairman of the Geology Department. Teaching, research and writing were carried out during sabbatical leaves at the University of Padua, Italy, and the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He was listed in "Who's Who" in America. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Yola Mills; son, Joseph W. Mills and wife Lucina, of Villa Rica, Ga.; grandchildren, Lisa Thompson and husband Trevis, Baton Rouge, Leland Wong Daugherty and wife, Tegan, of New Brunswick, Canada; and great-grandchildren, Madeleine and Eva Thompson, and Leona, Michael and Rosabelle Wong Daugherty. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Andrea Mills Daugherty.
