
Dr. Robert Henry Cane, D.V.M., passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. He was born on Dec. 19, 1933, in Berlin, Germany, to Dr. Walter and Gertrude Cane. His family immigrated to New York in 1936. In 1956, he married Sarah Ann Cann, of Baton Rouge. He served as a sergeant and instructor in the U.S. Army. In 1962, he earned his doctorate of veterinary medicine from Cornell University. He began his first veterinary practice in Baton Rouge in 1963. He and his wife had five children. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sarah Ann Cann Cane. He is also survived by his son, Robert Henry Cane Jr., his wife, Anne Marie, and their three children, Michael, Jack and Katie; his daughter, Carolyn DeSeay Loubiere, her husband, Gregory; and grandchildren, Hank Martin and wife Amy, Sarah Martin and Josiah Loubiere; great-grandchildren, Payton, Camille and Ava Martin; daughter, Sally Ann Callais, her husband Bert; and grandchildren Claire, Mitchel and Jude Callais; daughter, Jena DeSeay Cane; granddaughter, Zoey Cane Belyea; daughter, Elizabeth Cane Coxe and husband Carey; and grandchildren, Nicholas and Lily Coxe. He is also survived by his brother, John Cane, of Florida. Cremation will be handled by Rabenhorst Funeral Home. Visitation at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 8833 Goodwood Blvd., on Friday, Feb. 15, from 10 a.m. until memorial service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society of Baton Rouge. Doc devoted his career and heart to the care and well-being of animals.
