Dr. Z was a very special man. He helped me so much with my MS. I will always remember how you touched my life. R.I.P.

Steve was a good friend in college. He was going to become a doctor no matter what it took. He went to Italy, learned the language and got the course work he needed. When he came back I saw him briefly and he had great stories about living in Italy and how they viewed "the crazy American." In college during the Viet Nam war the country was divided. Steve wrote an English essay about how the war affected us. He described a man who had "a pro war job, drove a pro war car, lived in a pro war neighborhood and when he came home at night he ate fish with pro war tartar sauce."  After years of not seeing each other we re-connected on LinkedIn. He wrote: "I'm doing alright. Reading your summary of my paper, its probably a good thing that I didn't pursue writing as a career. You could probably blackmail me with some of the stuff I did. My kids- twin boys - one lives with me at home. Just the two of us since my wife, Mari, passed away. His bro, Josh is married and in NO and works for the mayor there. My daughter, Danielle, also lives in NO (means New Orleans for you northern types). She works in the movie world in the art department." Steve was full of love. 

As one of the many kids that Steve, who I always knew as Dr. Z, coached and mentored, I grew up thinking everybody had someone like a Dr. Z in their life. I met and befriended his two sons, Josh and Nathan, in first grade, and I was fortunate enough to spend time growing up with their family. My first introduction to Dr. Z was him doing magic tricks for a bunch of boys, me included. I loved magic and was just captivated by his card tricks and charisma. He was the funniest and most talented doctor I'd ever seen! At one of the many sleepovers at their house, Dr. Z showed me a new trick I hadn't seen before: he levitated! Of course, it was only from a certain angle, and he couldnt always do it, but I was convinced. I believed he could levitate for an embarrassingly long time, but now I think I believed it for so long because I knew Dr. Z was a special kind of person. Dr. Z was a coach, a physician, a teacher, a magician, a father, and so much more. I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten to know Steve and his family. Everyone should have a Dr. Z in their life. Please accept my sincere condolences.
