Victor Camille Chairmonte was born on July 7, 1933, in White Castle, LA, to Camille A. Chairmonte and Mary Moran Chairmonte. His childhood was spent in White Castle working alongside his mother, father, sisters and brother in the family grocery store, Chairmonte’s Grocery. This instilled the lifelong qualities of dedication to family and hard work. Victor eventually relocated to Baton Rouge, LA, where he lived until his death on April 10, 2024. He was co-owner of the The Lamp Post, Inc., on Government Street with his friend, William (Bill Sword) from 1968-1982. From 1982-2012, he was co-owner of the business with long time dear friend Earl T. George, Jr, which they moved to North Harrell’s Ferry Road. Vic and Earl, shared a lifetime of common interests including a decade’s long project in which they moved and renovated an old home where they lived for nearly 40 years. They traveled extensively throughout North America and Canada, sharing their stories of railway travel, dining, stage productions with all they encountered. They were loyal supporters of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, the Manship Theatre, and Theatre Baton Rouge. He was a longtime member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Victor is survived by his sister, DorothyAnn (Dottie) Chairmonte; niece, Myra Ann Delaune; longtime companion, business partner and friend, Earl T. George, Jr; and goddaughter, Kelly Sword-Hurtado.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joseph E. (Buddy) Chairmonte; sister, Josie C. Delaune; brother-in-law, Ramey J. Delaune; and nephew, Cedric J. Delaune.
A visitation for Victor will be held on Monday, April 15, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church from 9 am until the funeral mass at 10, conducted by Father Cleo Milano. A private burial will be held at the White Castle Cemetery Mausoleum family tomb. Pallbearers are Myra Delaune, Kelly Hurtado, Enrique Hurtado, Oscar Lejeune, and Terry Tuminello.
