With his wife and daughters by his side, William Scott “Scotty” Maxwell entered eternal life on April 5, 2025, following a brief illness. Scotty was born on August 12, 1946, in Tullos, Louisiana, to Max William Maxwell and Betty Jo Adams Maxwell. The oldest of six children, Scotty spoke fondly of his childhood spent with his siblings and cousins on the family farm in Urania, including visits with his beloved grandmothers and great-aunt, and participation in the Baptist church.
Scotty graduated from LaSalle High School in 1964. He attended Northwestern State University (NSU) in Natchitoches, LA, where he was a founding member of the Theta Mu chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and the chairman of the Louisiana Student Government Association. At Northwestern, he met his wife of 55 years, Christine Reed Maxwell of Alexandria, LA. When they married in 1969, he became an extended part of the Reed family, establishing and managing the annual family football board, complete with an engraved winner’s trophy that has been passed across the state and the country for the past 50 years.
After graduating from NSU, Scotty attended law school at Louisiana State University, ultimately setting up his law practice in Winnfield, LA, where he also served as President of the Winn Parish Chamber of Commerce and coached all his daughters’ t-ball and softball teams every summer. As a board member of the Pine Ridge Country Club in Winnfield, Scotty spent many enjoyable afternoons perfecting his golf game, which included shooting 63 on 18 holes and a coveted hole-in-one.
In 1989, Scotty relocated to Baton Rouge, LA, to establish a new law practice. He had great pride in supporting the education of his three daughters at St. Aloysius School and St. Joseph’s Academy, where he served three terms as president of the Dads’ Club.
Scotty will be remembered for his friendliness to people from all walks of life. He never met a stranger and considered all he met worthy of a handshake and a greeting. His favorite pastimes over the years included cheering on the LSU Tigers, bragging about his children and grandchildren to any who would listen, and “getting his steps in” around Baton Rouge.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Jan Alsup and Kathy Maxwell, nephew, Andrew Nugent, brothers-in-law, Lee Nugent, Chuck Alsup, and Danny Reed, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jean and Roger Reed.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife; his daughters, Catherine McDaniel (Malloy) of Alexandria, VA, Angie Maxwell (Sidney Burris) of Fayetteville, AR, and Marcie Maxwell of Memphis, TN; his grandchildren, Maxwell, Murphy, and Vidrine McDaniel, and Elizabeth Burris; his sister, Ann Nugent; his brothers, Kim Maxwell and Jamey Maxwell; in-laws, Becky Reed, Archie and Jackie Reed, Stephen Reed, Jennifer and Wynn Lawrence, and Vicki and Jay Durham; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered with great affection and missed in the big and little moments of life. Donations in Scotty’s memory can be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, where he received care as an adolescent.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., immediately followed by the funeral service at 12:30 p.m. at Rabenhorst Funeral Home (825 Government Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70802). Following the service, there will be a brief commitment service at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Garden of Peace (445 Marquette Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA 70806).
