

Al attended Crown Point schools where he participated in all sports especially track and field. He played short-stop on one of the first organized American Legion baseball teams in Indiana. He left high school on his eighteenth birthday to join the Navy in the Naval air gunnery schools in Florida. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Civil Engineering, class of 1950. He became a licensed Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor.
In June 1953 he married Marietta Southworth. He was employed by Pierce, Gruber and Beam, Design Engineers in Indianapolis as a construction site manager, and later with J.M. Foster, Industrial Contractors of Gary, Indiana, supervising projects in Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky and Texas. He retired in 1993 as Vice-President of Operations.
With an active interest in government he served 2 terms as a member of the Crown Point City Council, and a term on the Crown Point School Board.
A lifetime Chicago Bears and Cubs fan he also cheered on the Purdue Boilermakers, Texas Aggies, Houston Cougars and the Rice Owls, his kids University teams. An avid golfer he enjoyed playing with friends and traveling. Al was a lifetime member of The Purdue Alumni Association, American Legion post #20 Indiana, First Methodist Church of Crown Point, and St. Marks Methodist Church, Baytown TX, and the Indiana Association of Professional Engineers.
Surviving him: his wife Marietta, children: Brian (Dana Marek) Leslie Speranza (Donald) Courtney Esparza (Richard) Douglas (friend Mary Hendrick), Alison Whitehead, Gayle Iverson (Bryan). Grandchildren: Alia (Nicholas Aunchman), and Stuart Whitehead, Jordan, Peter, and Hayley Speranza. Erin Griffin (Michael), Phillip (Araceli), and Samuel Esparza, Remy (Michael McDonald). Great Grandchildren, David McDonald, Jett Iverson and Amelia Aunchman. Brothers Herbert (Donna), Edward (Patricia) in laws, Judith Jaeger, Herbert Southworth (Suzanne), Frank Glinis and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him: brothers Arthur and his wife Eva, Rodger his wife Mary and sister Joyce Glinis.
In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the Memorial Fund, St. Marks United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
A service of Celebration will be at St. Marks United Methodist Church, 3811 N. Main, Baytown TX, April 4, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.
