Andor (Andy) Scheller, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and faithful Catholic, entered eternal life on Friday, January 2, 2026, surrounded by his family, strengthened in the hope of the Resurrection promised in Christ.
Born on September 7, 1935, in Herend, Hungary, to Antal and Maria (Oszvald) Scheller, Andy grew up in the shadows of World War II. In 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution, he courageously escaped to Austria, where he attended the College of World Commerce on a United Nations scholarship.
Andy arrived in the United States on July 2, 1958, through derivative American citizenship. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in March 1959 and served as a pharmacist at Baumholder Army Base in Germany before being honorably discharged after two years of service. He enrolled at Rutgers University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry in May 1968 while working full-time as a lab technician.
Andy's professional career included distinguished roles at Union Carbide, Allied Chemical, and Exxon Chemical, where he retired after 30 years of dedicated service. At Exxon Chemical, he excelled as a technical services and new product development engineer in the plastic film industry and was awarded four patents in the field. Even in retirement, Andy remained active with his professional community, participating in numerous ExxonMobil annuitant activities and staying connected with colleagues and friends.
On September 1, 1962, Andy married the love of his life, Agnes, with whom he shared nearly 63 years of marriage until her passing on May 10, 2025. Together, they built a loving home and raised their family across four communities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and ultimately settled in Baytown, Texas. Travel was a cherished part of their life together. In retirement, Andy and Agnes explored 95 countries across all seven continents, balancing their global adventures with peaceful days by the pool at their Texas home. Andy's other passions included reading, classical music, Hungarian folklore, musical theater, and rock collecting.
In addition to his many personal and professional accomplishments, Andy remained devoted to his church, where he sang in the choir and assisted with the Sunday collection.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Eleonóra Szili of Pápa, Hungary, and Valéria Pászti of Budapest, Hungary; and his beloved wife, Agnes.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Suzanne Scheller; his daughter, Nora Scheller; his daughter and son-in-law, Tracy Scheller and David Oaten; and his six cherished grandchildren: Anthony, Christopher, Arianne, Madison, Elyse, and Ella.
A viewing will be held at 9:00 AM on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Baytown, Texas. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 AM, with Fr. Terence P. Brinkman officiating. Andy will be interred beside his beloved wife, Agnes, at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. A memorial Mass celebrating Andy's life will be held there at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 16, 2026, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with a viewing beginning at 9:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Andy’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project. Online obituary and condolences are available at dignitymemorial.com and monahanfuneralhome.com.
In this time of sorrow, we commend Andy's soul to the merciful love of God, trusting in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
