Donnah Sue Gilbert, affectionately known as Meme, passed away on July 20, 2024, at the age of 85 in Baytown, Texas. Born on June 10, 1939, in Quinton, Oklahoma, Meme led a life marked by determination, creativity, and an unwavering spirit that proved she was indeed the toughest woman around.
Meme pursued her passion for helping others by graduating from San Jacinto College, where she became a Registered Nurse. Meme worked at Southmore Hospital in Pasadena, Texas, showcasing her career as a real-life superhero. Cloaked not in a cape but in scrubs, she navigated the Emergency and Maternity departments and led as the Night Shift Supervisor with the kind of fortitude that would make any owl envious of her nocturnal prowess.
Outside of her career, Meme had a rich life filled with various interests. She was an avid deer hunter, known as the best shot in camp. Her artistic talents were expressed through painting, creating beautiful pieces that were often gifted to loved ones. Meme's flair for fashion was unmistakable, always dressed to impress with vibrant hair and lively outfits. Above all, she cherished moments with her family and friends, dedicating her time to taking care of people, which reflected her generous spirit.
This tenacious lady leaves behind a legacy more bountiful than her own hunting trophies. Meme is survived by her brother, Ronnie McKaughan; children, Donnah "Bink" Marshall, Duane and Lisa Gilbert, and Crystal and Dennis Duvall. She was a proud grandmother to David "Davey" III and Heather Marshall; Anna and Brian Flournoy; Ava and Ben Winford; Angelique and George Douty; Chris and Brittany Gilbert; Regina and Ryan Handle; Kelly and Jeremy West; Matthew and Jill Duvall. Meme’s memory as a beloved spouse is held dearly as she was preceded in departure by her husband of 58 magnificent years, James "Papa" Gilbert.
The Gilbert family tree has lost a mighty branch, but the roots run deep. Her family legacy of being the great-grandmother to her 30 great grand-children is evidence of a life filled with love, strength and determination.
A graveside service will be held in remembrance, where family and friends will gather to honor a life lived with compassion, grace, and an enduring commitment to her loved ones. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to have known her.
