Helon Kay Ponder, 81, of Baytown, TX was born September 27, 1938 in Taft, TX and passed away Saturday, June 27, 2020. The oldest daughter of Elgin and Elon Reichenau, Kay moved with her parents to Baytown in 1942 and was a faithful member of Baptist Temple for over 70 years. She was a proud graduate of Robert E. Lee High School class of 1957 and then attended Lee College, University of Houston and Texas A&M-Prairie View where she obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in education. She was a dedicated educator in Goose Creek CISD for 33 years, where she used her talent as a painter to teach art before spending the majority of her career teaching 1st and 2nd grade.

After her retirement, she spent time crocheting, gardening and traveling, but most importantly was the time she treasured with her family and friends. She took pride in organizing vacations, holidays and reunions that created memorable traditions to preserve the closeness of her family.

Another passion she pursued throughout her life was keeping her family connected through the generations by curating their genealogy. She spent years compiling ancestry reports and photographs, contacting relatives globally and shared her love with other families outside of her own who were seeking to learn about their family tree. She was a member of the Goose Creek chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in Baytown; the Solomon Barrow chapter of Daughters of the Republic of Texas; the Plantagenet Society; the Jamestown Society; US Daughters of the War of 1812; the National Society of Magna Charta Dames and the Baytown Genealogical Society.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Hugo and Mada Reichenau, Carl and Frankie Wilson Russell; her parents Elgin and Elon Reichenau; son Norman Dwayne Ponder; and son-in-law Duane Smith. She is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years William Norman Ponder; son and daughter-in-law Rance and Rhonda Ponder; daughter and son-in-law D'Laine (Ponder) Smith and Gilbert Luna; daughter-in¬law Vicki (Ponder) Turnipseed and husband Robert Turnipseed; sister and brother-in-law Geana and Wilburn Pfeiffer; grandchildren Michelle (Ponder) Perry, Kelvin and Danielle (Ponder) Webster, Matthew and Veronica Ponder, Danon and Holly Ponder, and Skye Smith; great¬grandchildren Cullen Ponder, Audrey Ponder, Kevin & Trevor Perry, Koda Ponder, Randall Ponder and Owen Webster; numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends; and her loyal rescue dog, Sweetie.

Her family will receive friends at Navarre Funeral Home Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 10 a.m., at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Looney officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Garth Rd. in Baytown, TX.

Mrs. Ponder was my 1st grade teacher. After 2nd grade, I moved to Highlands so I didn't get to see her anymore. When I was in college, I was a substitute one day at Pumphrey, and after school was over and the kids were gone, I walked the halls and found Mrs. Ponder's room. I walked in the door and said, "Mrs. Ponder, you probably don't remember me...." to which she replied, "Sharon Taylor oh my goodness!". It had been at least 15 years! How on earth!? Needless to say, Mrs. Ponder was my favorite teacher! The world has lost an angel.

My sincerest sympathy to the family. Mrs. Ponder was my 1st grade teacher at Pumphrey elementary. I will always have memories of kind spirit and beautiful smile!

Kay was incredible! Her knowledge of Russell history was extensive and her generosity sharing that knowledge helped all Matthew Russell descendants., which I am one. Her laugh and story telling made our conversations entertaining and educational. The thing that makes me smile that at last she will be in heaven getting the answers we looked for in our genealogical quest😀!

We sure will miss Kay's smile and fun personality! She was our family historian and helped plan our family reunions at Luna's Mexican Restaurant. We were in the Goose Creek DAR club together as well as being cousins.
May GOD bless and comfort Norman and the family.
We loved her and will be with her again some day.

Norman and Rance

So sad to hear of your loss its David Parkinson, Pauls son from Richardson street, Billy Badeaux contacted me with this news. I recall the past fun with had with Norman Jr and Rance growing up, both the Ponders parents were inspirations and examples to us. Folks like y'all are surviving less and less and the world is showing its ugly side lately somewhat related to that.
I would appreciate a get together with Rance and you guys after we get past this pandemic i don't think i have seen Rance since 1975. we should make it a point to contact

I remember Kay and Norman when they first came to the Moldenhauer Family Reunions in Grapetown, Texas....I had a interest in the family and the history, but it wasn’t until 2000 (or thereabouts) that Kay and I connected...by that time, I had developed an interest in the family tree and Kay and I could spend hours on the phone sharing genealogy, stories and methodology...her love of and knowledge of it were awesome!!! After reading Kay’s story, I truly understand the gift she had and how she has been an inspiration and motivator for me, to “keep digging”... we had wanted to get together sooo many times...share notes, show me her artifacts and we’d been dreaming of putting a Moldenhauer Family Story together...

But...God had His plans and they super ceded anything we were planning...but I know that the minute she entered Heaven, Kay was “gathering together” all her families and having the Grandest Reunion ever.....

Kay will me greatly missed by Norman, Vicki, Robert, D’Laine, Gilbert, Rance, Rhonda, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and sister Geana and brother-in-law, Willie....she leaves a void in all our lives that only with God’s help will we be able to fill it....

My thoughts and prayers have been with Norman and the family from the time I heard of Kay going into the hospital...

Thank-you Willie and Geana for being in the forefront of keeping me updated and to G’Anna for sending a Facebook message to my daughter, Rebekah.

I so truly want to be with the family, but unfortunately, I can not...therefore you all are in my prayers.

God’s Love, Peace and Strength as you begin a new journey....
