Jerry Don “Dead Eye” Dean, aged 92, of League City, TX, passed away and went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 12, 2026. Born on August 17, 1933, in Chandler, Texas. He was a devoted husband, father and PawPaw who loved the great outdoors.
He was one of thirteen children, raised in Chandler, Texas until he joined the Navy to fight in the Korean War. After serving his country, he found himself in Baytown, Texas where he found the love of his life, Myrtle Jean Troutman, who would become his devoted wife of over 68 years. They raised their family in Baytown and Jerry Don spent 33 years working for US Gypsum in Houston until he retired in 1992.
Jerry lived a full and meaningful life, rooted in faith, family, and the simple joys that made life full. He loved God above all else, and his faith shaped who he was - steady, humble, and kind.
Family meant everything to him. He was a constant presence - strong, dependable, and full of quiet wisdom. We always knew where we stood with him - safe, supported, and cherished. His presence was comforting, his wisdom reassuring, his love unwavering, and his storytelling was the best entertainment ever. He taught his family the value of integrity, hard work, and gratitude, not through grand speeches, but through the example of how he lived.
Jerry also knew how to enjoy life. He loved playing dominoes, especially a good game of 84, where his sharp mind, competitive spirit, and sense of fun truly came alive. Those games were about more than winning - although you would not know it because he won 99% of the time! - they were about laughter, fellowship, and time spent together.
When he wasn’t at the domino table, he could often be found outdoors fishing or hunting. He had patience like a fisherman, perseverance like a hunter, and a deep appreciation for the simple blessings of life. He loved spending time outdoors with his children, grandchildren and his many buddies from East Texas.
Jerry Don leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, and love for the outdoors—a legacy that will live on in all of us who were blessed to know him. We are better because of him, and we will carry his lessons, his stories, and his love in our hearts forever.
Jerry Don is preceded in death by his parents, 11 of his 12 siblings, granddaughter Heather Dean, son David Edmund Dean, and hunting buddies Randy and Joe Paul. He is survived by his wife Myrtle Jean Dean, sister Lila Ann Bilderback, daughter and son-in law Leah and Lance Jordan, daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and Dr. Richie Ehlers, grandchildren Heath and Sandy Dean, Lauren and Doug Sander, Lexi and Patrick Gondesen, Peyton Ehlers and Jackson Ehlers, great grandchildren Carter Stice-Dean, Hayden Dean and Savannah Grace Dean. He is also survived by his hunting buddies Charles, Larry, Brandon, Allen, Alton, Bobby, Brad, Chuck, David, Don, Drew, Lanny and Michael who kept him going by sharing domino games, stories and laughter over the years.
The family would also like to thank all the special “angels” who helped care for him in his last weeks of life. Your care and compassion made his transition to heaven a peaceful one.
