Be devoted to one another…contributing to the needs of the saints…practicing hospitality."" (Romans 12:10-13) Devotion and hospitality characterized Melva's life. The door was always open to everyone at her home, and she never met a stranger. Melva was born in Pelly, Texas, on June 4, 1929, the youngest child of George Washington Flowers and Addie Deleta Flowers. Taking those special gifts of devotion and hospitality with her, Melva was called to be with the Lord in her new home on December 7, 2013. Melva grew up in Baytown and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in June of 1947. While working in her uncle's law office during the spring of her senior year, Melva met and fell in love with a young man who was working in the police dispatch office. Melva and Howard G. Johnson were married June 27, 1947. They shared forty-eight years together before Howard's passing in November of 1995. They are once again together…now walking the streets of gold.
Melva was a dedicated member of Second Baptist Church for over sixty years. Her cake pans, casserole dishes, and ice cream freezer were always busy cranking for whatever event they were needed. Over the years she was also active in the Ashbel Smith PTA, Goodfellows, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and Friends of Lee College. Melva and Howard also worked tirelessly for the Red Cross teaching CPR throughout the area.
Anyone who knew Melva knows that she was a serious bridge player and thrived on her weekly bridge games with friends. If you planned an activity you wanted her to attend, you needed to plan around the bridge games. Melva also epitomized the statement - ""Shop till you Drop!"" She loved to shop, and shoes and jewelry topped her list. She had something to match every outfit with a pair or two to spare just in case. She was also full of color – THINK PINK!!
Beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and special friend, Melva is survived by daughter, Wendy Lyn Pekar of League City; daughter, Deborah Ann Robertson and husband James of Buda; five grandchildren, Gregg Allan Pekar and wife Rebecca of League City; Shawna Dee Thomas and husband Rob of Olive Branch, MS; Roxanna Lee Liu and husband Ronald of Frisco; Beau Jeffrey Robertson of Sweet Lake, LA; and James Bryan Robertson of Shenandoah; five great-grandchildren, Lauren Ashley Thomas, Madison Paige Thomas, Aaron Joel Thomas, Paige Olivia Pekar, and Avery Michelle Pekar; and many life-long friends.
Melva was her mother's ""Doodle Dumplin;"" Howard's, ""Angel,"" and just the ""Doodles"" to the grandchildren and many who knew her well. Doodles has now taken her spot in heaven's hospitality row and will be waiting to greet us with a hug and a smile just inside the Eastern gate – in His time.
A celebration of Melva's life and homecoming will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at Navarre Funeral Home with pastors Dave Jirrels, Rob Thomas, and Shawna Thomas officiating. A special tribute of the song, Oceans, by Hillsong will be provided by great-granddaughter, Lauren Thomas.
It was Melva's request that any remembrances or memorials be made to the DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center at the Houston Methodist Foundation, P.O. Box 4384, Houston, TX 77210 in memory of Melva Johnson or to Second Baptist Church, 6227 N. Main Street, Baytown, TX 77521.
