Peter, one of seven children, was born on July 3, 1929, not far from the banks of Bayou Teché near Leonville, Louisiana, where he grew up on the family farm. After schooling, he began working in the hospitality field in the Golden Triangle of Texas. While during a return trip to Louisiana, he met Genevieve Boyd from St. Martinville Parish at a Catholic bazaar and a romance blossomed. He was drafted by the US Army in 1951 resulting in service in the Korean War. Upon return from Korea, he entered a lifelong commitment when Genevieve became his wife in 1953. They immediately moved to Texas where they remained for their lifetime.
During stays in East Harris County and Houston East End, he worked in various trades in the petrochemical and furniture retailing fields before settling into the Shell Development Company for a 28-year career. The couple eventually moved to Baytown, Texas as the family grew to include six children. He instilled in his children a very strong work ethic and sense of responsibility while providing unconditional love and encouragement.
