Just finding out about this and my heart breaks. Mr.Cushman was my  photography teacher my junior year of high school and he inspired me so much. He always encouraged me and mentioned how he loved my photos. I haven't gone to college yet, but if I do I would want to major in photography. He was an amazing teacher and his passion for photography always inspired me. May he live on forever in our memories.

My heart and prayers go out in support of the Cushman family. I have many memories with Peter and the Cushman family as a whole, but one in particular stands out . My favorite memory is spending the Chinese New Year indulging in all the yummy food and traditions Peter and his family spent preparing for the day!  Peter’s adventurous spirit and “go with the flow” attitude will be dearly missed.

My condolences. He was an incredible role model and mentor for so many people. I will never forget how he would always talk about his “happy face” meaning he had a huge tan line in the shape of sunglasses on his face. Meaning he was outside all weekend, most likely sailing. Truly a great human who left a positive impact that will carry on for a very long time. May he rest in peace.

I pray for healing for his family and friends.

Mr.Cushman was such an amazing and kind person. He was an excellent teacher and he helped me find my love for photography. He always had a positive attitude and fun personality. I always enjoyed going to his class even on my bad days his class was something I looked forward to.I am devastated to hear this news sending love and prayers to all his family and loved ones, may he rest in peace.

Cushman- I’m going to miss our talks at the pool. You always made me feel like family and I enjoyed our talks of school & city stuff.  You had a way of “telling it like it is” but somehow never coming across rude.  Your smile was infectious.  Both of your girls are amazing people and all the love and support you gave them shows.  I’m forever grateful for you and your family treating Tess like part of the family and opening up your door to her on so many occasions.  I will think of you every time I see a Hawaiian shirt or hear about the Sea Scouts.  You will truly be missed.  

PS! I’ll keep Leslie company at the pool! She really is the best❤️ rest easy my friend.

I don’t even know where begin…Cushman was my teacher from sophomore to senior year, the year he retired. I didn’t sign up for the class, it was forced in my schedule because I had a spot that needed to be filled. In less than a year he had grown to be my most favorited teacher ever. My first period was Stars and my second was yearbook/photography. On some of the worst days of my highschool years…somehow he always knew how to make us smile and laugh. Everyday was a new and fun adventure in his class. From field trips to campus outings and getting to skip classes to help with yearbook. Cushman truly cared for each and every student. Rambunctious ones, as well as the ones who weren’t his. Even if you weren’t in his class, you knew him, honestly he’d probably already said hi to you or tried to get you to smile in the hallways(he did this a lot). Our teacher was always so unapologetically himself. Freshman year I was SO shy I would eat lunch in the bathroom by myself just so I didn’t have to talk to anyone. By my senior year, I had so many friend groups I could go almost anywhere in the cafeteria. Because of him I found myself and broke out of that shell, he taught me to take up space and be different. He helped shape me into the person I am today. And I couldn’t be more grateful for it. My prayers go out to all of his friends and family.

Me and Maddie have been friends for years. I remember Mr.Cushman teaching my history class with Maddie in it. He was the coolest teacher and father. I would always see him at the pool sometimes with his family and we would hang out for a bit. Thank you for the memories Mr.Cushman, may your family be blessed and you rest peacefully.

He taught my photography class when I was a senior in high school, very kind man I’m so sorry to hear of his passing.

To know Peter Cushman is to be filled with so much knowledge, culture, and kindness. He had such an amazing heart and passion in his life. I AM SO BLESSED TO HAVE KNOWN HIM. From knowing him as a girl scout leader and knowing his girls to him changing my life in high school. I wanna share about a time that represents who Peter was and all that he helped every student with. I was being mistreated by my high school volleyball coach and going down the wrong path due to my spirit being drained. Mr. Cushman saw me in class and noticed mu change in demeanor and took a chance and got me interested in photography again. He sat with me and talked about how sometimes our passion for something can be molded into another form. He got me to shoot all the events and I finally felt SEEN. Mr. Cushman took the time to help me out of a situation and gave me so many important lessons about life, school, and how to enjoy the little things. I will always remember everything that this man did for me and my thoughts and prayers our for his family. I know that even though Peter Cushman isn't present in this world it doesn't mean his heart isn't being passed on! Please support as much as you can as he was an amazing, phenomenal, and caring teacher!

 Leslie, Savannah and Maddie, our family sends their heartfelt condolences for the loss of your husband and father, Pete. 

My memory of one event is very vivid. It was Changdu, China and you and Pete had just that minute become parents for the first time. The glow on your faces was so bright and immensely hopeful for your future. And then Maddie came later and your family was complete. From that time forward, I witnessed in person many times, during our adoption reunions, how dedicated he was as a father, and frankly a guiding leader to parents and our children. His experience as an educator truly came through. 

Please, let's let our families remain in touch into the future. We have so many memories together that I greatly cherish.

Mr. Cushman was an amazing leader. I am so thankful he was in Nate's life. He never gave up on him.

Peter was my photography and yearbook teacher when I was a senior at Sterling High School in 2021. I had a love for taking pictures and he helped me learn everything about camera and I still love photography to this day. Rest in peace and thank you for everything Peter.

I only had the breif pleasure of knowing Mr. Cushman as a student of his Texas History class at Baytown Jr. High School, but that was enough to know what a great man he was. He cared about his students, made us laugh as well as learn, and was overall wonderful to be around every time we were in his classroom and beyond. His light and warmth will be missed.

Mr.Cushman was one of my junior high history teachers and one of the teachers that have had the biggest impact on my life. He saw a potential in me at an age where I couldn’t see it myself and pushed me to work harder and be better. He was a shining light who left a smile on every students faces and always pushed them to be their best so that we could succeed. Mr. Cushman left a mark on so many students lives, my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

He was such an amazing person. He was never my teacher but always gave me a hard time about not smiling in school before I graduated such a kind loving person. Had the biggest heart I’m sending my condolences

I am so very sorry for the loss of our beloved Peter Cushman. He was my photography teacher all throughout my 4 years of highschool. He taught us not only how to photograph, but valuable life lessons. He is one of the reasons I got through highschool and his classroom was always a safe space. I wish healing for his family and friends.

Mr. Cushman was my 7th grade history teacher, he is one of those teachers that you never forget because of the impact he makes on your life. Even though life takes you down different paths and you lose contact, Mr. Cushman was always a memorable mentor for many. Mr. Cushman was a fantastic educator and a great friend!  He was such an inspiration to all he came in contact with and will be missed.  My prayers are with the family he leaves behind but his love will live on!

My sincerest condolences to the entire family.  My heart aches at what an incredible loss it is to no longer have him here.  He was an outstanding man who was such a dedicated educator, and a wonderful father. I will never forget the way he lit up when he spoke of his girls. He often updated me on their achievements and his pride was obvious. I always enjoyed going into his classroom and visiting with him on campus. He was a unique man with such a unique spirit, and he will be incredibly missed. The world is truly a better place because he was in it. Thank you, Mr. Cushman.

Pete was my generation of a  good beta brother and a good friend. I’m so sorry to hear about this. Prayers for the family. I wish I could be there.

So many wonderful memories, from Lucy's to the beach. But somehow what always comes to mind is Peter cooking breakfast at our house when you all came to Ga on one of your treks. His version of breakfast burritos spoiled us for life! 
We miss him already and love you all more than we can say.
