Ralph was a kind, humble man who often spoke quietly. But his seemingly still waters ran deep. Those who took the time to hear Ralph out, were as charmed by his good natured and self-deprecating disposition as they were surprised by his quick wit and dry sense of humor. This quiet, hilarious man touched the lives of many people. Ralph was one of the “good guys” and he was popular for all the right reasons.
Ralph worked for many years along the Gulf Coast as a career tugboat captain for ExxonMobil. He attended Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas; and he studied at Lee College. Ralph was also a U.S. Navy Veteran, and, at the conclusion of his service, was honorably discharged with the rank of Gunner’s Mate M Third Class.
Ralph’s Golden Years were like a personal Renaissance. Ralph worked hard to know and improve himself. Always a lover of good storytelling, Ralph overcame his innate shyness about speaking in public by joining Toastmasters International. Toastmasters helped Ralph to hone his public speaking skills and Ralph went on to win awards at public speaking competitions for his telling of funny stories.
Ralph never missed an opportunity to dance or make a new friend. He lit up the floor of local dance halls where he loved to dance and connect with the numerous beloved friends he so easily made.
Ralph is predeceased by his parents Henry and Cleo Mathews, siblings Gayle Mathews, Donald Mathews, Harold Mathews, and Ruth Mathews, wife Fay Icet Mathews, stepdaughter Linda E. Neese, and very special friend Jo Ann Gwaltney. Ralph is survived by his grandchildren D. John Neese, Jr. and Leah E. Neese, nieces and nephews Mike Mathews, Steve Mathews, Ray Mathews, Phyliss Mathews Schmelter Kohler, and Angie Mathews, and numerous great grandchildren, great nieces and great nephews.
Ralph’s family would like to express their appreciation and love to his Visiting Angels caregivers Shwanna, Sherry, Rebecca, Natalie, Charlie, Whitney, and Cynthia as well as Brandon, Jared, Damon, and Josh. Ralph recently got acquainted with the Chambers County Veterans Association who were extraordinarily supportive and kind. Ralph’s family also thanks the people at Ascend Hospice who made Ralph’s final days peaceful and comfortable.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Chambers County Veterans Association 501(3)(c), P.O. Box 417, Mont Belvieu, Texas 77580
