God called Robert to his heavenly home on July 2, 2022 after a fierce battle with brain cancer at the age of 62. He had a strong faith in the Lord and was a member of Vertical Life Church. He had a great love for his family and the Brotherhood of Firefighters. Robert enjoyed listening to classic rock music, playing with his dogs, working outside in his garden, and traveling with his family. He will be missed deeply. Robert was known as “Dad” to his children, “Grampa” to his grands, “Bob” to his family from the north, and “Chief” to his fire fighting family.
When Robert was five years old he told his mother he wanted to be a firefighter. Since he came from a long line of Chicago Firefighters, his Dad, his Grandfather, and his Uncle John would take him to work on their shifts. Those special times stirred in him a deep compassion for “the job”. A little boy’s dream turned out to a God-given gift! He loved his job! He retired in January this year after serving the citizens of Baytown for 40 years.
Robert is preceded in death by his father in law, Elery Doise, his mother in law, Irene Doise, and his father Robert C. McKay. He leaves behind his wife, Dana, of 29 years, four children, Megan (David) Simons, Lauren McKay (Elizabeth), Derrick (Caren) Veillon, and Devon (Erin) Hudson; five grands, Carter, Faith, Harvey, Walter, and Emmett; his mother, Carol, his siblings, David, Tom (Karen), Mary Jo (Kim), Jim, Rick, Tim (Heather), and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
We want to thank Vantage Hospice for the love and compassion that they showed in caring for Robert in his last months of his life. We want to thank The Baytown Fire Department, Cloverleaf Fire Department, and Magnolia Fire Department for helping us celebrate “Chief’s” life and honoring him. And we want to thank everyone who loved, supported, and prayed for us during this journey.
A visitation will be held Friday, July 8, 2022 from 10:00-11:00 am at Second Baptist Church Baytown, 6227 N. Main St., Baytown, TX 77521, with funeral services honoring Robert to begin at 11:00 am.
For those wishing to express sympathy we ask that donations be made to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in honor of Chief Robert Timothy McKay.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.navarrefuneralhome.com for the McKay family.
