Kerwin Brent Stone was born on August 25th, 1947 and passed away on July 1, 2022 at the age of 74. He was born in Stephenville, Texas to his parents Nolan Dean and Myra Hitchcock Stone and is survived by his loving family: son, Andrew Brent Stone, and his wife, Vicki, of Lindale, Texas and grandchildren Elizabeth and Austin; his son Matthew Nolan Stone and his wife, Margaret of Atlanta, Georgia and grandchildren Charlotte and Jackson; his brother Aris Dean Stone and his wife Tasmen of Huntsville, Alabama and family.
Kerwin was a native-born and lifelong Texan. After receiving a B.S and M.S. in mathematics from Southern Methodist University in 1970, Kerwin was commissioned as an officer into the US Air Force and served tours at the 20th Surveillance Squadron at Eglin AFB, Florida and in Southeast Asia, including the 17th Radar Squadron at Ko Kha Air Station, Thailand. After his honorable discharge from the active duty in 1975 at the rank of Captain, he returned to Texas and received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas. He practiced real estate, construction, corporate and commercial law as a longtime member of the American Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas, and the Jefferson County Bar Association. He is a life member in Phi Delta Phi honorary legal fraternity and a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.
Kerwin was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Beaumont for many years and a former member of the Board of Trustees of the Beaumont Independent School District, however much of his time and passion in the last 20 years was spent working with veterans. He served as President of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 292 in Beaumont since 2005, president of the VVA Texas State Council, comprised of 37 chapters across the state from 2018-2021, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the national organization of Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc. from 2015-2022. In his capacity as a leader of VVA at every level, he received numerous awards and recognitions, culminating in the VVA Commendation Medal, which he received in 2022.
Kerwin was known for his intelligence, wit, generosity, disdain for neckties and love of cats (not really), but will be remembered most as the consummate, behind-the-scenes servant-leader. He often seemed to have the right words for the situation, and he never failed to serve his family, friends, church or the community of veterans who were so dear to him.
Services for Kerwin will be held at First United Methodist Church of Beaumont, Texas, with Rev. Jon Stouffer officiating. In lieu of flowers, Kerwin requested that donations be sent to VVA Chapter 292, P.O. Box 1071, Beaumont, TX 77704; or to First United Methodist Church Youth Ministries, P.O. Box 3247 Beaumont, TX 77704.
A Gathering of Family and Friends for Kerwin will be held Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 1:00 PM at First United Methodist Church, 701 Calder Ave, Beaumont, Texas 77701, followed by a Celebration of Kerwin's Life at 2:00 PM.
