Shelby was a proud veteran of both the United States Army and the United States Air Force. He dedicated his career to military service, faithfully serving his country while providing a loving and stable life for his family through years of commitment and sacrifice. Raised by his beloved Auntie, Gladys Loland, Shelby carried throughout his life the values of kindness, dedication, and love for family that she instilled in him.
On August 23, 1970, Shelby married the love of his life, Dolores, and together they shared 55 wonderful years filled with love, devotion, and cherished memories. Together they attended Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Nederland, where Shelby was always willing to lend a helping hand. One of his favorite ways to serve was assisting the ladies of the church by cutting fabric squares for quilting projects.
Shelby enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life and took great pride in tending to his garden. Above all else, he treasured time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called him “PePaw.” He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and faithful friend whose kindness, dedication, and gentle spirit touched many lives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James Luke; his sisters, Tommie Lou Zang and Jerry Sue Richardson; his aunt, Gladys Loland; his granddaughter, Alaina Hardt; and his great-grandsons, Mahlon Hardt and Simeon Hardt.
Shelby leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years, Dolores (Werner) Luke; his children, Shelby Luke Jr. and wife Nancy, Deborah Fox and husband Steve, Gary Luke and wife Angela, and Kevin Luke and wife Denise; along with 10 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church Quilters, 2711 Helena Avenue, Nederland, Texas 77627.
