

Hazel was born in the small town of Heppner, Oregon. She was the youngest of 10 children. Her parents moved to Portland then to Baker, Oregon where she graduated from high school. She then went to Eastern Oregon College in LaGrande graduating with a teaching certificate. She taught two years in Perrydale, Oregon and one year in Vanport, Oregon. She left teaching and soon found out she had tuberculosis.
After 6 months in the hospital she was able to marry the love of her life. In 1946 she married Don Lyon and they settled in Metzger, Oregon where she resided until her death. They were married 57 years before he passed in 2004. Besides her love for the Lord Jesus she loved spending time with her family. She also enjoyed travelling, spending time at the beach, gardening, and socializing, sewing and especially playing games.
Hazel is survived by her sons Don Lyon & wife Carol, Ron Lyon & wife Brenda, daughters Lynette Venheim & husband John, Janet Nuro & husband Timo. Grandchildren Cheryl Lyon, Rachel Venheim Layton, Elizabeth Venheim Houghton, Abigail Venheim, Bryan Nuro and Krista Nuro. Great grand children Dexter and soon to be born Penelope Layton and Henry Houghton. Hazel is also survived by and older sister Helen Gilligan of Canby and numerous nieces and nephews. You will be missed by many.

A private burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery with a public memorial Feb. 26, 2 pm at North Plains Christian Church, 31231 NW Commercial St., North Plains, Oregon 97133.
