Dec. 29, 1952 – Dec. 24, 2016
Scott was born in Hillsboro, Oregon to Robert and Gertrude White. He lived in Hillsboro throughout his childhood years. After high school, he earned an associate degree from PCC and worked for several years in landscaping. Later, he went to work as an elevator mechanic for Otis Elevator Company. He worked there for 35 years until he retired in January of 2015.
In 1976, he met his wife, Caryla and they married in July of 1980. They raised their family of three daughters in the Portland area.
Scott was always ready for new experiences and had numerous hobbies through the years. In his twenties, he enjoyed rock climbing in the Gorge and at Smith Rock. As his family grew, he took up fly fishing on the Metolius River and spent hours tying his own flies. He taught his daughters how to fly kites at the Oregon Coast and marveled at the amazing choreographed routines at various kite festivals!
As his daughters entered grade school, he began coaching their soccer and basketball teams. He continued coaching through their middle school years. He went camping with his family in various spots and Scott introduced them to the wonders of the night sky. He purchased several telescopes and enjoyed studying the constellations. Since they often camped close to rivers or lakes, Scott became interested in getting out on the water. So, kayaking became a favorite recreational activity. It provided a great way to explore the coastline. Waldo Lake was his favorite destination for stargazing and kayaking adventures.
In his fifties, he became interested in flying remote control airplanes, helicopters and, more recently, drones. During retirement, he was an avid gardener, especially growing tomatoes and peppers.
Family and friends often gathered to enjoy Scott’s cooking and BBQ. He was known for putting time and attention into the details --- just the right spices and herbs and always trying new techniques. His grandchildren raved about his mac-n-cheese and lasagna. Whenever and whatever Scott was doing, he provided the background music. He loved a wide variety of music and listened to rock-n-roll, blues, jazz and classical.
Scott’s parents preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Caryla; his brother, Dennis (wife Leann), his sister, Robbyn (husband J), daughters, Heather Margason (husband Mac), Tara Wangen (husband Jon), Kelsey Imondi (husband Chris) and five grandchildren.
The family suggests donations be made in Scott’s name to the OHSU Foundation.
