Obituary of David L. Short
David Leo Short,96, was born in Hillsdale, IN, and died November 13, 2020. David is predeceased by his parents Strauder and Bessie Keene Short and sisters and brother - Frances, Daniel and Eleanor. From his childhood home near the banks of the Wabash, he learned the value of education and to fish, garden and enjoy sports. He served in the US Army in the Korean War and attended Indiana Central College (UIndy) School of Business. David met Catherine Hoehl at an Army dance near her home in Baltimore, MD and they married in 1951. David's career with Huber Hunt & Nichols (Hunt Construction) spanned almost 40 years. His pride was Hunt's national industry leadership. Upon retirement, he worked part-time at H&R Block until his 83rd birthday. David's life of volunteer service was for his children and their Catholic grade school, high schools and universities including Holy Name, Cathedral, St. Agnes, Our Lady of Grace, Notre Dame, Xavier, John Carroll and Dayton. He tried to teach his children (more successfully his grandchildren) gardening, fishing, bird-watching and black-jack. He taught his family body surfing on the beaches of Maryland and New Jersey and crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay. He loved reading, cross-words and card games and his iPad, iPhone and sport teams Cubs, ND, Colts and Pacers. And Shapiro's. David's wife of almost 69 years, Catherine, survives with their children John, Peg Duncan (John Bisbikis), Kathleen, Dan and Patty (Thom Ebner). Pop Pop is survived by ten grandchildren. Colleen (Brandon), Johnny (Maura), Ellen (Sam), James (Rocio), Emily (Brendon), AJ, David (Katy), Tim (Heather), Maggie and Danny. And nine great grandchildren. He attended their births, baptisms, graduations, sports, poetry readings, plays, concerts and weddings throughout the USA. David's family thanks Dr. Pat Enright, Franciscan Health, the staff of St. Paul Hermitage and family caregivers along with a band of priests, nuns and friends joining the family in prayer.
