

Loretta was born January 24, 1934, in Indianapolis, to the late Henry and Ida Striby. A lifelong Indianapolis and Beech Grove resident, Loretta had a life full of love, family, and service. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Ralph Schafer and siblings; Mary, Joseph, Karl, Frank, Henry Striby and Margaret Breen.
Early in Loretta's career she worked for American States Insurance Co. and held many different positions within the insurance industry. She was also a Librarian Assistant for Indianapolis Public Schools and finally a Bookkeeper for Beech Grove Public Library, where she retired after 25 years. Loretta was a devoted mother, loved her family and spending time with them, was an avid card player (especially Bridge) and also enjoyed playing dominoes with family and friends. She loved her children endlessly and was a woman with a strong Catholic faith.
Loretta served on just about every committee she possibly could for St. Jude and Holy Name parishes. She was also long-time active member of Nativity Catholic Church where she was a lector and eucharistic minister. Loretta enjoyed the fine arts and was a regular attendee of the symphony, Broadway shows, and local theater.
Loretta is survived by her children; Joseph Schafer, Ann (Tim) Schubach, Tony (Carrie) Schafer, Paul Schafer and Jean Goodwin, grandchildren; Kathryn Gosnell, Ashley Goodwin Calaway, Crystal (Bobby) McFarland, Johnathan Goodwin, Andrea (Daniel) Buergler, Adam (Rachel) Schubach, Joseph Schubach, Noah Schafer, Mary Schafer, Michael Schafer, Elizabeth Schafer, Aubrey Schafer and 5 great grandchildren, sisters; Julia Jones and Barbara (Don) Carr.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Little and Sons Beech Grove Chapel from 4:00pm-8:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, February 18, 2022 at Nativity Catholic Church (7225 Southeastern Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana) at 1:00pm with visiting one hour prior at the church.
