Born on October 14, 1931 in Havana, Cuba, Ben is the son of David Faro and Sara Behar Faro, originally from Istanbul, Turkey. Benjamin was a “first generation” Cuban, having been born of Jewish Sephardic parents whose family settled in Cuba from Turkey. Ben was the oldest of three siblings and the only boy in the family.
As a young boy, Ben liked playing baseball with his friends in the streets of Havana. He celebrated his bar mitzvah and shortly after graduating high school, he went on to work with his Father. Ben and his Father spent many years working together selling men & women’s clothing and would travel to nearby cities in Cuba to increase their sales and were quite successful. For many years, Ben’s sisters tried tirelessly to bring Ben to the US but were unsuccessful due to America’s restrictive immigration policy. While Ben lived most of his adult life in Cuba, he immigrated to the US with his wife, Elia in 1980 during the Mariel boatlift, right before his 50th birthday. The Mariel boatlift was a mass emigration of Cubans, who traveled from Cuba's Mariel Harbor to the United States between April and October of 1980. Ben arrived in Houston where he finally reunited with his dear Mother and sisters after being apart for many years.
Ben started a new life in a new country with the help of his family and friends. He took classes to learn the English language and worked for Fingers Furniture for several years until his retirement.
Benjamin was preceded in death by his sister, Estrella Faro Garson and brother in law, Al Garson. He is survived by his dear sister Vicky Mitrani and brother in law, Salvador Mitrani; his nieces, Elisa Nudleman, Nelly Garson and Sara Garson and his only nephew, David Mitrani.
Ben was a kind-hearted soul that loved his family dearly, especially his Mother, Sara. He always made time to stop by and see his Mother no matter how busy he was. Ben was a humble man that enjoyed the simple things in life, watching Astros baseball, a game of dominoes with friends, Cuban coffee, good food and occasionally, a good Cuban cigar. Ben will be missed dearly by all.
