Geraldine (Geri) Kubeskie McCarty, age 78, was born August 6, 1947 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston, TX, and passed away unexpectedly on March 6, 2026 while on a European vacation, comforted in her final moments by her loving husband, Lawrence (Larry) McCarty.
A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Geri was devoted to her family and her friends, of whom she had many. An only child, Geri was born to loving parents Henry and Phillomay Kubeskie. She grew up in Houston’s First Ward and attended St. Joseph Catholic School in the Old Sixth Ward. She grew up taking tap dancing lessons and performing in dance recitals. No doubt, her recital costumes flamed her flair for fashion, which continued throughout her life. A bibliophile by nature, she frequented Houston’s public libraries as a young girl, and in later years as her family grew, she could often be found curled up with a good book. Geri lost her gentle, loving father Henry to cancer when she was only sixteen. Academically gifted, Geri attended Incarnate Word Academy in Downtown Houston, graduating in 1965 as Valedictorian. She stayed in Houston for college, attending the University of St. Thomas and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1969. Geri made many dear friends at Incarnate Word and at UST that remained in her life to the end, truly becoming extended family.
In 1967, Geri and her mother traveled to the 1967 Montreal Expo. On their way, they stopped in Washington, D.C. to visit a friend from the University of St. Thomas who was in the seminary. One of Geri’s childhood friends reached out to a cousin serving in the Navy in Washington, D.C. and asked him to show around her friend Geri and Geri’s mother while they were in town. Borrowing some money to show them a good time, Larry showed Geri and Phillomay the town and treated Geri to dinner, dancing, and drinks in Georgetown. They began writing to one another, and in 1972, Larry moved to Houston for a job. A few months later, they were engaged, and by June 1973, they were married. Another year after that, they welcomed their first child. Over the next several years, three more children followed.
Eventually moving to Houston’s Sharpstown subdivision (with Grandma Phillomay in tow), Geri and Larry joined St. Francis de Sales Catholic Parish, where they remained active for many years, making numerous friends. Geri taught Sunday School and she and Larry chaired the Car Raffle at the annual Bazaar. They sent their children Richard, Melissa, Larry Jr., and Gerald to St. Francis de Sales Catholic School, where Geri served as PTO President, and then to Strake Jesuit College Prep and St. Agnes Academy, before all four children attended and graduated from Texas A&M University.
In her later years, the pride and joy of Geri’s life were her grandchildren Sarah and Trip (Larry III) McCarty, Jack and Erin Tyner, and Henry (Harry) and George McCarty, to whom she was known as GiGi. Geri was a frequent participant in Grandparents’ Days in Houston and Austin, in addition to attending many swim meets, gymnastic meets, football games, and baseball games. She enjoyed spending time with them at family gatherings, festivals in Chappell Hill, TX, and at the family farm. Although initially afraid of dogs as a young girl, Geri developed a great love for animals and enjoyed several faithful canine companions through the years, including her children’s dogs, all of whom loved to run in the pastures of the family farm.
Geri was known to friends and family alike for her love of fashion, her love of entertaining, and her love of the Christmas season, which routinely brought a multi-page letter accompanying the annual family Christmas card photo, as well as multiple Christmas trees at her house. She also made a near-annual trip to New York City at Christmas time. After retirement, Geri loved to travel, accompanying husband Larry on several European cruises and going on several other trips. Over the years, she traveled to England, Ireland, Spain, Canada, Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Australia, the Netherlands, Hungary, the Bahamas, and Singapore. A devout Roman Catholic, Geri had a special devotion to praying the Rosary, and fittingly, her final travels brought her back to Rome, one last time.
Professionally, Geri spent nearly five decades working for the Barnhart Company as an oil and gas accountant. Geri retired from Barnhart Co. after forty-seven years with the company. Along the way, she earned certification as a Certified Public Accountant, studying for and passing the exam amidst the chaos of raising a houseful of children.
Geri is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Larry McCarty; son Richard and wife Kelly McCarty and their children Harry and George; daughter Melissa and husband Desten Tyner and their children Jack and Erin; son Larry Jr. and wife Jennifer and their children Sarah and Trip; and son Gerald McCarty and partner Nadine Jaloway. Geri was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Phillomay Kubeskie, and her half-brother Richard Wachel.
A vigil and rosary will be held at Earthman’s Funeral Home at 4525 Bissonnet St, Bellaire, TX 77401 on Thursday, March 26, 2026. Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 pm, with a rosary at 6 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 27, 2026 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 8200 Roos, Houston, TX 77036 at 11 am, followed by a reception until 2 pm. Inspired by Geri’s love of fashion (and honoring a request Geri once made), the family invites those attending her funeral to wear bright colors. Committal will be at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023, at 3 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that, if desired, donations be made in Geri’s memory to the University of St. Thomas School of Nursing, Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, or St. Agnes Academy.
